Brief notes cover Hershey Gibbs company buying an Imperial touring car, garden walks, a new P R timetable for May 14, store hours reducing to 6 pm on select weeknights, a hospital operation for Miss Mary Tshudy, and local incidents including a church square vandalism and a near railway crossing accident. Residents urged to support public works like the street sprinkler.
Guy Longenecker and Harry Mohn, both local youths, are jailed in Lancaster after a March 11 burglary at A R Bomberger Co hardware. Longenecker faces felonious entry and larceny charges. Mohn is implicated. Evidence links stolen revolvers, cartridges, and knives to the pair. Longenecker previously faced a shooting charge and has a prior record. both await hearing before Squire Derr.
Early this morning William Wood in the woodwork department of the trap factory had the tip of his middle finger on his right hand sawed off by the band saw. Dr. M. H. Yoder dressed the wound.
Between nine and ten last Friday two unknown youths were seen prowling around A R Bears house on North Broad street Warwick. They were on the rear porch when heard and fled when Mr Bear searched the area. A refrigerator on the back porch showed signs of tampering.
Sunday morning between two and three o clock marauders entered Morris Eckert s Rome residence while occupants were away. William Snavely awoke to a barking dog, saw a man trying a door, and fired when no reply came. The pair fled. no hits are believed.
A Sunday school orchestra recital in the Moravian chapel Thursday evening drew about four hundred attendees. Highlights included a cornet solo by Harry Keppel, a vocal solo by Bessie Gingrich, and readings by Miss Gilbert of Linden Hall Seminary, all earning encores. About $45 was raised for purchasing instruments and equipment.
Borough Policemen Wm H Greek arrested a hobo who claimed to be John Brown on drunkenness and disorderly conduct and vagrancy. He was committed for thirty days to the county jail by Squire Derr. Constable Hacker escorted him to jail. On Tuesday morning Greek arrested Dan Wilson on the same charges and he was jailed for 30 days.
Mrs Catharine Walters died at her daughter Mrs Harry Walters home on Newstreet Warwick from throat consumption aged 87 years 25 days. She was born at Lexington and lived on a farm at East Petersburg. Survived by children including Mrs Keller Mrs Walters John Landis Monroe Harvey and others. Funeral services were held at Kissel Hill and East Petersburg Lutheran church with interment at East Petersburg. Rev A E Cooper officiated.
Mrs. Thomas Boyer died at her sister Mrs. Alfred Rhoads home in Myerstown on April 26 at about 45 after a long illness. She had recently lived in Reading and had been visiting for her father John Rabold’s funeral when illness struck. Survivors include sisters Mrs. Mary Spayd Mrs. Alfred Rhoads Ida wife of Jacob Ober Amanda wife of Jacob McQuaite Alice wife of Tisiy Leopold Jacob Cyrus and Isaac Rabold Alfred both of Reading and children Mrs. Hunsicker Harrisburg and George at home. Funeral was held April 29 at Heidelberg meeting house near Reistville with interment following. The deceased lived previously on East Main Street Lititz and at Warwick until about a year ago.
Mrs Louisa Boyer wife of John Boyer died April 27 at age 44 from heart failure after living near Red Run and Lexington born to Mrs Anthony Wildt and first husband Christian Imhoff. She had five children with Israel McCreary and four with John Boyer. Funeral at Hesss meeting house with Church of the Brethren rites conducted by Revs J W G Hershey and John Le Cevre. interred nearby.
Simon D Brubaker died at his home along the road from Kleinfeltersville to Sheafferstown Lebanon Co after a lingering illness with consumption aged 53 years 4 months 28 days. He was born in Clay township and had traveled widely in youth. A former cigarmaker in the borough he also served as a correspondent for the Recorp. Surviving are his wife ten children a sister Mrs David Shreiner of Lincoln and a brother Albert B of Hesston Kansas. Funeral services were held at his late home and at Lincoln with Rev Fertiz of Sheafferstown and Rev S C Enck of Columbia officiating.
Mrs Hiram Hoffer died at her husband’s home in Manheim last Friday afternoon from a stroke of paralysis. This was her fourth April stroke in four years, and she was 40 years old. The notice continues on page five.
Mrs. Harry Culp, alone with two children, awoke to smoke and a fire at the door of her Rothsville area home. Neighbors quickly acted and subdued the blaze after coal oil and a match were used. The incident appears incendiary as the door sill, floor, carpet, sink, and door glass were damaged.
Linden Hall Seminary outlines commencement week events from June 11 to June 14. Programs include sermons, class and alumnae activities, a senior play, reunions, exhibitions, a commencement address by Rev. Howard Townsend Quigg, and a notable monument at Machpelah cemetery for Mrs. James Sesseman crafted by Balter Bros. of Ephrata.
On Tuesday next John F Longenecker Lancaster county agent for Imperial autos will lead a trip by auto to Samuel Park s dairy farm near West Chester. Fourteen Imperial autos join the lineup starting from Longenecker s shop with routes through Lancaster Quarryville Oxford and return via Downingtown Coatesville. The Park farm hosts 100 fine bred cows and accompanying farmers will see mechanical milkers milking seven cows in three minutes.
Vermont Meiley will catch and Chester Spickler will play first base for Ephrata against Denver on Saturday. Harry Rudy will field for New Holland in its opener versus York Keystone. Hopeland opens versus Trap Factory with Stark and Huber as battery for Hopeland and McCloud and Johns for the Trap Factory at Hopeland with several locals on deck.

Civil War veterans Samuel C. Seather and Edwin Sturgis of Lititz remember May 3 1863 at Chancellorsville as members of the 122d Pennsylvania Volunteers. Eight Lititz natives fought. 109 of 800 were killed in three hours. Stonewall Jackson fell. Seather narrowly escaped a bullet after a tree was struck.
Blossoms bloom and orchards green up as warm nights and rain promise a strong harvest in 1911. Lin den Hall Athletic Association hosts a May 12 program with 15 cent adults, 10 cent children. Pigeon keeper John K Mathers raises squabs shipping to New York markets. Found stones at Broad and Orange mark 1837 masonry work. District 9 Sunday school institute set for Lititz area with two sessions and musical programs.
Last Sunday afternoon two young hotel workers Maggie Eckert and Lizzie Dietrich hired a team from A. G. Hershey for a drive. The horse bolted near Lexington turning toward Lititz, throwing both women at Pleasant View hill. They suffered bad bruises while bystanders escaped injury as the horse dashed along Front and Broad streets before capture. The injured were taken to safety and the owner dispatched a replacement team.
