General Sutter and the old iron furnace tale
A historical account describes General Sutter in the postwar period visiting an iron furnace site used to cast cannon and ammunition for the American army. Zellers recalls Sutter learning local knowledge, sharing meals, and even personally inscribing two small headstones for his brothers. The letters place their acquaintance around 1866 to 1872 with corroboration from Prof. Gudde. Sutter died in Washington, D. C. in 1880.
