The first half of the year records a 50 percent rise in French wines sherries and ports while brandy imports fall by an equal amount. Total wood gallons drop to 118 315 from 225 108 year over year. A broad array of local notes follows, including lawsuits in Allegheny County, Memphis yellow fever, education initiatives, railroad salutes, labor migration patterns, and farm harvests.
A reader from Topeka Kansas writes of the city’s location by the Kazsa River and major rail lines. He notes Topeka’s population around 11 204 with a floating crowd, wide Kansas Avenue, and streets named for U S presidents. He reports health, new buildings, and ongoing construction including a state wing and local educational efforts. Washburn College is highlighted with a sister college Bethany for girls run by the Protestant Episcopal Church.
Local friends of Reverend Win Rice formerly of York Pa or Moravian Church in Brooklyn N Y will be pleased to learn he will preach at the Moravian Church this place on Sunday August 17 and will conduct the service peculiar to the children’s festival. Miles Hallacher left this week for Toronto Canada. William Chapman of Chapman Slate Quarries Northampton county was in town Wednesday. Mrs J T Beckler and two daughters of Reading are visiting here. Spring Committee met at the Springs Hotel electing a standing committee for the year.

Other items include boy’s leg injury from a local creek, a tramp encounter with Minnie Wills, a missing Levi Buckwalter boy after tramps, a Baumgardner elopement tale, and Rev J Weirich missing church service amid a forged heifer incident.
