Fire destroys barn and sheds on Monroe Widders farm

A large stone barn with wagon sheds and a tobacco shed on Monroe Widders property along Middle Creek in Clay township burned Saturday evening. The blaze started in the tobacco shed and quickly spread to the wheat stack and other buildings. Livestock were lost and much of the contents destroyed. Insurance covered most losses. Widders suffered the heaviest financial damage. The origin is unknown, with a theory of spontaneous combustion due to greasy rags left by painters. The fire was visible from Lititz and surrounding areas. All insurance is held by Lititz Agricultural Company.
