Pepper and sale in a sprawling note filled with odd tales
A long winding column covers a mix of 19th century miscellany. It mentions cholera predictions, a drowning accident, iron exports and a planned mill boom, the obelisk in Central Park, shipbuilding, a former senator’s stock losses, and a parade of orphanage children in Newark. General Grant’s physician reportedly suffers vertigo while the hero himself stays awake at times. Reptile curiosities, cigarette myths, and a salmon trout lake mystery appear beside a trotter Maud and a Missouri senator’s dog tale. A New York thief named Kid Glove Steve and a Philadelphia caterpillar note close.

Tobacco Market Outlook Shows Lightening Stock and Improved Demand
The present outlook for tobacco favors sellers as packers hold less stock than in years, and manufacturers show similar declines. Last year’s crop was smaller than expected, with little old leaf left and most of the ’83 and ’84 lots sold or traded. Havana leaf quality remains solid, seed leaf turning out well, and several hundred cases sold recently at about the $1 Havana level. Acreage in Chester county is down to about two thirds of last year, with Havana seed making up three quarters of plantings as some longtime growers reduce or abandon crops. Local reports note harvest is underway though grain maturity appears uneven and late season pressures persist. Dovornas.
