First fire engine in Lititz linked to 1791 subscriptions
The Lititz fire engine, housed behind the Moravian Sunday school chapel, dates to 1791 with metal parts made in Germany and shipping records noting arrival in New York in 1798 and Philadelphia in 1799. The Lancaster assembly followed, leather buckets were ordered then, and the relic joins Bethlehem’s 1698 London engine as the oldest in the U S. The note also recalls Johann Rauch of Lititz who invented a screw auger around 1776, with his lead model tested on a turnip and later shown in Philadelphia in 1864.
