Cost of Stops and Coal Losses in Rail Travel

Floyd W. Parsons notes in World’s Work that a passenger locomotive consumes coal at about 1 pound per 52 feet traveled and that each unnecessary stop wastes 600 to 750 pounds of coal depending on train weight, stop length, and grades. Air line air draft can cost up to 2540 pounds in ten hours for a 50 freight car train. A five minute pop off wastes about TH pounds. If firemen saved a shovelful per ton used, coal saved could reach about 1 percent overall.
