New Year Arrives With Fireworks in Moravian Parish
The town welcomed 1879 with exuberant street festivities led by the Litiz Cornet Band. Moravian and Evangelical services marked the night, with German language sermons, solemn prayers, and a chorus as bells rang in the new year. New Year’s Day saw continued church attendance, totals for 1878 including 24 baptisms and 10 new members by certificate. benevolence donations rose to 1387.24. Linden Hall Seminary students provided Christmas dinners to poor families ahead of holidays.

Robbers terrorize Brubaker home near Litiz on New Year night
An elderly couple near Litiz were tied and gagged by three men who ransacked the Brubaker residence on New Year evening. Despite threats with revolvers and a corn chopper, about $12 was seized along with valuables. The robbers, described as well dressed with two medium and one tall man, fled north after two hours. A $200 reward is offered for arrest and conviction.
