Groundhog Day Unearths Mexican Horned Toad Appetite

Five Cent Meals Recalled From 1832 Ledger Tale
A 19th century account book found by Frank E. Schaerer reveals Abram Smith the school teacher was charged five cents per meal by Leonard Miller from Sept 1832 to March 1833, a nickel a meal, 15 cents a day, in Elizabeth township. The note reflects the cost of living a century ago.

Thirteen young men from Lititz and surrounding areas left via Reading railroad Tuesday for Camp Meade to join the national army in training. About 200 gathered at the station to bid them farewell as the Red Cross provided comfort kits sweaters and wearables. Names include Howard Lingley Edwin Wissler Frank Meiskey Henry Bowers John Oberlin Paul Fry Frank McCreary Carpenter Hartranft Jacob G Keller Roy Eckert Alfred Butzer Walter Carvel George Kratzert and others. E R Reidenbach missed the trip amid a misunderstanding. Jacob Keller formerly of Lime Rock had moved to Wyoming for a land claim upon notice to report. He arrived last week.

He trained at Fort Benjamin Harrison Indiana and was recently relocated to Washington DC where he attends the Army Medical College and remains stationed at the Soldiers Sailors and Marines Club. He writes that he is on the move and expects to visit home soon.

Expert Gunner Clarence Hoover of the Minnesota earned top marks in a 300-man rifle shoot at 5000 yards, hitting 285 bulls-eyes, and scored 250 hits with a machine gun. He also won for quickest machine gun assembly blindfolded. Hoover weighs 30 pounds more since enlisting, and his brother Melvin serves in the navy. He has one trip to France with no submarines sighted.
