Tobacco buyers scramble for weed in mad scramble
An extensive tobacco campaign is under way with buyers active across the region. Long & Taylor and C. B. Risser paid 16 to 20 cents for wrappers, 3 cents for fillers, and 4 cents for graded fillers while other merchants purchased at 15 to 20 cents. Bad roads slowed sales but prices are rising as farmers push for better returns amid pole-burnt crops fetching 12 to 13 cents and good crops stronger. Local buyers warn of possible packing if prices fail to meet expectations.

Death of Pediment the Elm mare shocks local community
On Monday forenoon Emanuel Diehm of Elm hitched Pediment a 27 year old thoroughbred mare to drive to his farm tenanted by Jacob Getz. The mare suddenly collapsed after a short ride and died, leaving Diehm grief stricken as Pediment was the last of her line. The report notes her noted sire Penryn and her long ownership by Diehm since age three. The piece also covers looming losses for cattle dealers due to low slaughter prices and lists upcoming meetings at local headquarters including the Y. B. P. B. gathering on Friday and the Frances Willard Memorial Meeting on Monday afternoon open to all.
