Tobacco crop movement boosts Lancaster county economy
About 1 500 workers handle the 1934 Lancaster County tobacco crop as it moves to city and county warehouses. The move is expected to bring roughly 3 275 000 dollars to farmers and laborers, with 1 900 000 to growers, 1 165 000 from the federal curtailment program, and 210 000 to laborers. The government has paid 500 000 so far, with a second payment tied to 40 percent of crop value. About 85 percent of the crop has been sold, and the season opened January 21 with a 15 cent per pound price. The note lists several local names and mentions a sleigh party for a school trip.
