In chapter one of the synopsis, Molly Birke, descendant of Molly Brant, bears Paul to a New York financier and dies when he is thirteen. Paul, now thirty-two, marries Claire Durand and leads a large river engineering project near Peribonka. His heart leans to Carla, a central European immigrant's daughter who educates village children and shares a deep bond with the mother of the children.
Paul visits Carla and her mother in a rain washed cottage and finds a warmth and memory in the women he loves. He reflects on Carla and his wife Claire, and feels the pull of enduring love across generations and loss.
Paul and Garla travel to Peribonka where Carla receives praise from Maria Chapdelaine and Samuel Caapdelaine. Back home Paul confesses his longing for Carla and cares for her mother as Carla grieves the mother’s sudden death with Paul's support.
Paul transitions from the pit’s raw labor to a spiritually draining New York business world. He grows closer to Carla as she grieves, and their bond deepens amid lonely mansions and a looming decision. Carla's return to office and a shared, restrained longing highlight a destined drift toward love and risk.
