Gift Giving and Year End Reflections in Lititz
The 1888 December 28 issue discusses Christmas gift customs and the rising extravagance of presents, especially at weddings and new households. It notes societal shifts toward moderating lavishness, bemoans harsh events of the year, and previews hope for the new year amid global unrest. It also reports local notes on snow, shop sales at Wanamaker’s, obituaries, marriages, a lyceum, revival services, and advertisements for Vick’s Floral Guide and remedies.

Pennville Pennings and Local News Roundup
A shooting match at Pietin's hotel drew a large crowd last Saturday while the Southeast corner had strong attendance the other day. Emanuel Fennel reported brisk business as Emanuel J. Kauffman bought a White sewing machine as a Christmas gift. Bishop family visits and court talk at the squire's afternoon session highlighted a day of chatter and local activity. Extracé specials and household goods fill the store, with Owen P. Bereken offering legal consultations on Saturdays and Mondays.
