Old Pear Tree Bears Bushels for Forty-Three Years
Jacob Kauffman of Orange Street owns a forty three year old Beauty Deanjau pear tree that has long yielded abundant fruit each season. Picking began this week with neighbors ordering what can be spared. The tree, planted when he moved in, finally bore fruit after twelve years of disappointment, and remains prized for eating quality. Benjamin Bucher on Front Street also grows a tree of the same variety. The fruit is green then turns yellow and luscious after storage and white when preserved.

Clayton Roth, a Lititz liveryman, cut and housed his tobacco this week. He reports the crop in A1 condition, heavy and free from rust or foxiness, predicting a strong county yield in quality and weight. His single stalk plant, planted in a lin cup and moved to a bucket, was found in a baggy box and will be cured, sweated, and made into cigars. Roth claims to have the smallest plot in the county.
