Tramps and Court House News From Bucks and Chicago
A long 1878 column discusses New Hampshire defining a tramp to force prison labor for up to fifteen months, calls for similar laws elsewhere, and notes Bucks County new courthouse ready soon with September court. It also surveys iron industry rebound, rising furnaces, job gains, and a hopeful fall-winter outlook, plus a Chicago tale of a man who marries a widow with six children and another husband, ending in jail.

Local incident at Springs child rescued from tramp
Last Thursday noon excursionists from Pottstown at our Springs heard a child cries from above the Springs. A small boy, six years old, of J. E. Sturgis was saved from a tramp by bystanders. The man, John Milton, was captured near town and jailed for trial. Tramps linger around the Springs and caused trouble during a recent patrol. An Evangelical Sunday-school excursion to the Ephrata camp meet is planned for August 18 with fare 25 cents round trip. A lightning strike damaged Samuel Bomberger’s house but caused no further damage or injuries.

Irreproachable banker entangled in defalcation tale remains baffling
The article recalls a bank director’s surprise at how a financier described as morally irreproachable could misappropriate funds and involve a pretty actress, prompting talk of private detectives. It also notes a farmer’s suicide over debt, a boy’s deadly lockjaw after a scratch, and a Lebanon man’s heavy drinking with funds raised from his wife's dress.
