Mellon Institute scientists Drs. Gerald Coz and John Motschl report that adding six percent sugar to quick lime mortar increases tensile strength by about sixty percent. Sugar is dissolved in gauging water and mixed with sand and lime, with cost modest given current sugar prices. Further tests on compression, setting time, and durability are planned, and the discovery could enable broader use in construction.
