WPA Administrator Harry L. Hopkins meets New England governors to coordinate rehabilitation for 100,000 homeless and repair nearly 0.5 billion dollars in damage after last week's hurricane, tidal waves, and floods. Death toll nears 650 as relief agencies mobilize and National Guards guard evacuation zones. A plane crash wreckage and tank found in Jamestown, Rhode Island, prompts authorities to identify the aircraft.
The Southwest Regional Dahlia show sponsored by the Indiana Dahlia society and local groups drew visitors from Southern Indiana and southeast Illinois. Over 150 varieties were displayed with awards given for all categories including largest bloom and sweepstakes. Local sponsors and ticket sellers were thanked for their support and prizes awarded to top sellers and a junior high school group.

Leonard Jacobson a 64 year old brakeman admitted full responsibility for the Tortuga Arizona wreck that killed eleven. He said he wished he could trade places with any of the dead and he threw the switch that caused the crash between two passenger trains on a siding.
The Linton Merchants win 6 to 2 over the Miners to claim the 1938 local championship in a three out of five series at City Park. Merchants tally in every era, ending the series with a decisive victory and plans for a Sunday game featuring a traveling colored team from Terre Haute or Indianapolis.
Three former Spanish-American War buddies reunited in Linton after more than 35 years. Fred Myers and Harley Tansey of Davenport Iowa and James Weller of F Street Northeast once shared quarters at Ft Stevens Oregon with the 93d Company Coast Artillery. Mrs Myers, junior vice president of the U S W V Auxiliary Iowa, will speak at a meeting of the Linton post U S W V and Auxiliary on Fifth Street Southeast.
Hospital report notes Mrs. Frank Roberts of Pleasantville was taken to her home Sunday. Paul Curtis of Farmers City was dismissed Sunday morning. Mrs. Noble Mulls of Jasonville route 1 returned home Sunday. Mrs. Maurice Dye of East Vincennes street underwent a major operation this morning. Miss Margaret Goshen of Linton route 2 was dismissed Saturday. Miss June Tincher of Linton route 2 underwent a major operation this morning. Miss Betty Kirkpatrick of Worthington submitted to a major operation this morning.
Adolf Hitler declared in a Berlin address that annexation of the Sudetenland is the last territorial demand he will make in Europe. He praised Germanys army and warned democracies, accusing them of hypocrisy while asserting the nations resolve and unity behind the move. He cited Alsace Lorraine and urged action if needed.
About 2,000 spectators attended the Saddle horse show in Bloomfield town park, sponsored by the White River Valley Saddle club. Over 50 horses competed from Bloomfield and surrounding towns. Max Dyson of Linton won his sixth straight pony class victory with the pony Moxie.
Dr. H O Woodrow, Greene County veterinarian, says eight horse cases of encephalomyelitis in the past week show two deaths. The western sleeping sickness causes staggering and drowsiness. early treatment and immunization from veterinarians can prevent infection.
Members of the I O O F lodge from several Southern Indiana groups are expected at a district meeting in Worthington on Saturday October 1. A program is being arranged and refreshments are planned. All Greene county Odd Fellows are invited to attend.
Premier Benito Mussolini told 100,000 Fascists in Verona that Italy would join any European war without hesitation and was speeding to Rome to lead mobilization at once.
Lloyds in London unveiled higher war risk charges for maritime transport with most rates doubling from last week. Baltic sea voyages were withdrawn from standard coverage and left to underwriter discretion.
Official circles said negotiations for Poland to regain Teschen were temporarily broken off after a Czech note proposing further talks in response to Poland's demand for evacuation of the district.
Greene County Prosecutor John Todd ordered a county grand jury in Bloomfield to convene Monday October 10 to indict James Jackson Batchelor and Sanford Slim Humphreys for the murder of Mary Ellis, a Jasonville woman, filed after speedy trial requests. The case, linked to the 1933 Ellis murder, has drawn regional attention as the first murder trial in years in the county court. Batchelor and Humphreys are jailed on affidavits pending grand jury action.
Six residents of Jasonville will receive U S citizenship certificates at a 7 PM ceremony in City Hall. Albert Marter of Linton supervised local classes. William Slough will give welcome remarks. Speakers include Angus Messick on duties and Weldon O Effler on community cooperation.
Former Linton resident Roy Richardson is being sought in multiple jurisdictions for selling property under a conditional sales contract and issuing a bogus $300 check. Logansport police say Richardson used a barber shop sale as the ruse and a local business name was attached to the fake instrument. He is believed to have fled the area after a $1000 spurious-check wave hit Linton and Sullivan residents.
Bosse High School crushed Linton 64 to 0 as the Evansville juggernauts built a 25 0 halftime lead and added three more touchdowns in the second half. Linton hoped for a two week layoff to rebound, while Bosse veterans and strong line play anchored the win. Brazil coach Landis remarked the Miners would be more in Linton's class next meeting.
President Roosevelt, in a personal appeal from Washington, urges Chancellor Hitler and President Benes to continue negotiations for a peaceful, fair, constructive settlement. He states the United States has no political entanglements and warns that general war will affect all nations, including the 130,000,000 people of the U S.
The White House said President Roosevelt will meet with his cabinet at 2 p.m. tomorrow due to a situtation. The issue is believed to be the Czech minority crisis, prompting the session.
The British government announced partial mobilization of defense forces and began wartime price controls on food. Sir Horace Wilson flew to Berlin delivering Chamberlain's appeal to Hitler as the nation readies for conflict. Chamberlain asked the King to stay in London to sign mobilization papers.
Prague informs Britain that Hitler's demands for surrender of the Sudentenland by October 1 are unacceptable and require further discussion. The government cites economic ethnographic and national defense objections and sends the list to Hitler ahead of his planned address tonight.
Sporadic gunfire echoed along the Teschen border as a clash between Czech and Polish forces left one Czech policeman dead and three Poles killed. Fifteen Poles were wounded as Warsaw demanded surrender of the contested district from Prague.
Greene circuit court clerk Lew Good, after three weeks at St Anthony’s hospital, was sent home to Linton Sunday and is expected to resume duties in the clerk’s office within a few days.
