A local real estate dealer notes a housing shortage in Linton with everyday rental applications while few habitable houses are for rent. He cites strong new construction and investment as signs of faith, and references Indiana coal trends and seasonal demand affecting prices and production.
About 200 ex servicemen from the region are expected at the Frank Courtney American Legion post home Saturday for an open house and installation of officers. Floyd E. Young of Vincennes will install. A steak and onion supper will close the program. The Bloomfield Quartet will perform and a membership drive update will be given. Sixty paid up members create a new year record beginning Oct 20.
The 1938 City league playoff between the Miners and Merchants may end Sunday at City Park or extend for weeks. Merchants hold a 2 0 lead after ten hits to six for the Miners in game two, with a close home plate call shaping the outcome. Both clubs promise their best battery as a larger crowd is expected for the possible final showdown.
Mrs. Harold Kendall, wife of the tavern owner, restrained three Gary men during a Vincennes area holdup. She drew a pistol, held the suspects at gunpoint until police arrived. The trio, Eugene Pinkstaff Pat McDermott and Ralph Ely, were taken to Lawrenceville jail after fingerprinting. A fourth man fled in a waiting car.
Dustin McDonald business agent for the Sled Carries and Common Laborers union along with George Vandenburg and Larry Thompson were indicted by the Monroe county grand jury for an alleged attack on Henry Pruett a construction foreman. McDonald faces assault with intent to kill and inciting a riot while Vandenburg and Thompson are charged with riot counts. Pruett a past commander of the local American Legion accused McDonald of knocking him down and kicking him after failing to remove his crew from an excavation job for a New Bloomington Elks home. McDonald a former heavyweight wrestler and local athlete was well known in Linton Stockton and Bloomington.
Mrs. Ott Lynch aged 52 a well known resident of near Koleen in eastern Greene county died at 12 30 this morning at Freeman Greene county hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2 o clock Sunday afternoon in Koleen with burial in Taylor cemetery there.
Eskin Turner Daily Citizen publisher displayed a sprig of apple blossoms from his own tree as part of a local trend of readers bringing in unusual natural specimens. The editor encouraged more submissions and noted the ongoing lighthearted exchange with patrons showing off nature’s peculiarities.
The K. of P. hall College Hill Craft shop and Nola D. Yoder Community house in Glenburn reopen this afternoon after summer closure. Supervisors Paul Prudhome Austin O'Brien Troy Wessell Bernard McAfee Claude Tuttle Newt Robinson Guy Clayton Oscar Haussin Percy Goodson oversee activities and instruction in manual training expected to draw many residents this season.

Linton City firefighters were called to second street southwest to extinguish a blaze near the home flue. The small loss was reported to be covered by insurance.
Mr. and Mrs. Horace Carrico of Detroit announce the birth of a baby daughter born September 12. The infant weighed seven pounds. She is named Mary Frances. The couple are former residents of Linton.
Japanese shock troops pushed deep into Hankow defenses and stormed Hangsin walls, about 70 miles from the abandoned capital as China and Japan battle lines shift. France strengthens frontier as machine guns guard Rhine bridges and reports of reinforced German defenses circulate.
The DNB reports that from Thursday night all railroad communication over a ten mile stretch between Germany and Czechoslovakia is halted. Blown bridges and tracks cited as the main cause.

Sudeten free corps clash with Czech forces in Salzdorf and Krautenwaldig sectors on the German frontier. Machine guns rifles armored cars and grenades used as fighting flares along the border. Five Sudetens killed as the fighting covers about 50 square miles inside former border areas.
In Godesberg Germany Sept 23 1938 negotiations between Prime Minister Chamberlain and Fuehrer Hitler reached a crisis point. a conference planned for this morning was postponed and Chamberlain sent a letter to Hitler awaiting reply. Reports indicate a demand for an implicit promise Germany would not move into Czechoslovakia during talks. A hitch emerged in the effort to settle the Czechoslovakia minority issue and agree on later steps toward European peace.
Sir Neville Henderson and Sir Horace Wilson of the British delegation left Chamberlain's hotel for a meeting with Foreign Minister Ribbentrop at Hitler's hotel. Wilson doubted a meeting with Herr Hitler tonight. In London a Cologne radio broadcast reported more than fifty killed in Sudeten re-occupation.
Health officials announce a second diphtheria case in Jasonville prompting precautionary measures at the school. Emphasis is placed on immunizing young children ages six to nine months as winter increases disease prevalence.
WPA allotment of 15 170 dollars approved to run the Lin ton stone quarry four miles northwest of Linton near state road 54. The project employs 30 men and supplies crushed stone for city streets and WPA projects. Labor costs covered by WPA while Linton pays royalties and maintenance.
The Southwest Regional Dahlia show in Roosevelt will display about 500 entries this weekend. The event, sponsored by the Dahlia Society of Indiana and local groups, opens 2:30 p.m. Saturday with judging completed before public viewing. Exhibitors include professionals and amateurs in separate classes.
In Chicago on September 23, dancer Lucille Summerfield, 18, was critically wounded after being used as a shield during a holdup in a handbook office. The gunfight left two masked gunmen dead and four others wounded.
