Harold H. Burton, Ohio Republican, nominated by President Truman to the U S Supreme Court, the first Republican proposed for the bench in over 15 years. Labor opposition predicted, with expected swift confirmation and a Senate likely to gain a seat as Burton’s appointment fills a vacancy. Burton’s philosophy aligns with Chief Justice Stone, and he is seen as a middle-of-the-road candidate shaping the court’s balance for years.
Last night's council continued talks on repairing several city streets. The city attorney was asked to advertise for bids and a plan meeting is set for October 1. The street department will relocate to the old gas plant to house all equipment under one roof. Third Street East residents complain of rain water draining from the main schoolyard onto gardens and a property owner on A Street Southeast reports issues. City Engineer John Fritz ordered to survey and report needed repairs to Mayor Carlton. Meeting adjourned.
The annual fall garden festival at Linton Civic Garden Club is set for Saturday Sept 22 in the Ford Used Car Market rooms on A Street Northeast. Entries please by 11 am with judging to follow at noon. exhibits include roses chrysanthemums gladioli and a variety of vegetables fruits and artistic arrangements reflecting community effort and Victory era emphasis.
Richard Sells, 13, admitted bludgeoning 78-year-old Mrs. Mary Johnson in Springfield after being confronted with a lie detector test. He said he followed her from a grocery store, struck her with a lead pipe, robbed her purse, and later confessed as authorities planned a murder indictment.
Indiana wartime legislation will stay in force until President Truman declares the war ended. Attorney General James A. Emmert announced the opinion, noting child labor laws and all other war measure statutes remain enforceable. State Labor Commissioner Charles W. Kern requested the ruling.
Funeral services will be held at ten oclock Thursday morning for Sharon Ann Laymon the still born daughter of Nellie Fay and Henry Laymon born in Freeman Greene county hospital Tuesday. Survived by grandparents Mr and Mrs John Layman Switz City rural route and an aunt Mrs Helen Horn of Switz City. Burial in Prairie Chapel cemetery. Welch and Cornett Funeral Home in charge.
Mrs. Charles Page of B Street Northwest was admitted for treatment Tuesday evening. Mrs. Vere S. Heath of Sandborn underwent major surgery this morning. Helen Wilson of Sandborn had a tonsillectomy today. Mrs. Daniel G. Bynum and baby were taken home in Bloomfield Tuesday evening. Ralph Padgett has been dismissed. Mrs. John Underwood of Jasonville was dismissed this morning.
Girl Scouts schedule a Friday evening meeting and wiener roast at their cabin in Humphreys Park. The planned hike to the Boy Scouts is postponed due to campground unavailability. Leaders stay overnight with the girls and attendees are asked to bring a bed roll and personal gifts for future efforts.
James Edward Ensign, 25, of Cleveland, held in Terre Haute by military authorities after his arrest while posing as an air force captain. He had a stolen automobile from an army officer in Indianapolis and admitted escaping Aug 1 from Camp Bowie Texas, where he served a 10 year sentence for desertion.
From Japan three B 29s pursue a nonstop run to Washington along the great circle route with a planned landing sequence. Headwinds forced two aircraft to seek Detroit refueling while a third aims to complete the transcontinental leg to Washington despite gasoline concerns.
William De Priest 29 was jailed in solitary confinement after trying to saw from a St Joseph County Jail cell. He pleaded guilty to a robbery charge in circuit court. His wife Mrs Laverne De Priest was questioned about saws found in his cell used unsuccessfully Sunday night.
Detroit reports UAW moves to calm large scale auto industry conflict as strikes threaten production. Richard Frankensteen and other leaders hold talks with strikers and management at Kelsey Hayes Wheel Company as Ford suspends 1946 car output across 11 plants. Labor chief Schwellenbach designates Warren to push settlement of wage demands while WLB absorbs authority. Government aims to harmonize labor and management and ease 83,000 idle workers in Detroit.
Indianapolis police chief Jesse P. McMurtry challenged media hype of a crime wave noting daily records show modest crime, fewer assaults and robberies, and offset by substantial arrests. Suspect Richard Woodard, 24, is being questioned in the death of grocer William Raeber and the assault slaying case of Dorothy Stick. A 46 year old widow reports kidnapping and assault in a field.
Evansville city judge James Crenshaw struggled to find a qualified probation officer. He then elevated his private secretary of 10 years, Edith Crenshaw, to the position, despite it being his wife.
