Special to Daily Citizen reports Lewis Stoelding of Edwardsport, about 50, died at about 10 AM in a Sandborn area trench cave-in during bridge construction three and a half miles west of Sandborn. Several tons of dirt collapsed on him. he was rescued alive but died en route to care, body taken to Edwardsport home.
In Terre Haute Indiana a car struck a switch engine at a crossing. Two women Mrs Rebecca Kirby and Mrs Rose Ripple and Elmer Lynch were killed. Henry Hastings was injured with a fractured skull. An inquest was planned for today.
Sioux City report details clown Mon tana Curley who left rodeo grounds for an hour to return and find his wife Ruth and helper Rudolph Carsten gone with his car clothes and $500 in cash. Associates say Ruth, Rudolph and the coupe with cash and clothing vanished, leaving Curley with a single clean shirt camping tent and a dog.
Indiana state police report 650 automobile accidents in August caused 16 deaths and 311 injuries. Total damages affected 2383 vehicles. Two people died and 21 were injured in crashes involving autos.
Four bandits robbed the University State Bank in Des Moines Indiana and escaped with between seven thousand and eight thousand dollars. Cashier R M Messerchmidt estimated the loss would exceed seven thousand dollars.
Commander Louis Demouget and two companions, lost in a ship to shore mail plane from the liner Ile De France, were rescued at sea. They were landed at Newlyn Cornwall by a steamer, with two men reported well and Demouget believed injured by exposure. The incident occurred near Penzance in southern England.
Indiana authorities expect about 50 people to face charges as state, federal, and county agents wrap up a probe into an automobile theft ring operating across Indiana Ohio and Illinois. Sixteen cars have been recovered and one gunshot fired. The gang allegedly specialized in high priced closed cars with many stolen in Ohio and Illinois ending up in Indiana.
Paul Jaworski, builder of the Pittsburg express truck dynamiting, who escaped Allegheny jail, was shot and captured in Cleveland after a fight in which he killed a patrolman and wounded another. He was believed dying.
Franklin county's 15 000 miners voted in a statewide referendum to ratify a wage agreement between United Mine Workers leaders and Illinois coal operators. The measure, first wage cut since John Mitchell led the union, is seen as likely to be approved by about two thousand votes and to take effect September 16. A general mining resumption is anticipated statewide Monday.
Evansville Indiana September 14 a vice investigating committee reports wholesale corruption in city operations. The chief of police three board of safety members and a license inspector face charges including protection of gamblers and bootleggers and failure to enforce laws. Impeachment proceedings were OKed by the city council. hearings set for September 24 with adjournments as needed. Harry R Anderson Benjamin Bartlett Kilmer Lehnard William Popp Samuel James named in the statement.
In Lafayette Indiana on September 1 dry weather in August reduced the 1928 corn crop by about 9 million bushels according to M M Justin crop statistician for the Department of Agriculture and Purdue University Agricultural Experiment Station. The drought hit the Ohio River area first and later spread statewide as rains arrived too late to stop shrinkage. The U S loss is estimated at 100 million bushels below August 1 prospects.
The International Typographical Union selected Seattle, Washington as the 1929 meeting place. Delegates rejected a New York proposal for a forty four hour week and another plan allowing local unions to strike without executive council approval. A proposal to let local unions strike without notifying the international president if arbitrators are not used was also defeated.
New York safety congress reports 4,638 deaths from accidents in New York City during the previous year. Of these, 942 were children ages 6 to 14. Automobiles caused 1,136 deaths, falls 1,020, drownings 475, burns 340, street cars 136, railroads 51, and other causes accounted for the remainder.
In Hopkinsville Kentucky J W Fraser Williams a noted hunter and trainer announced Palo Alto the President Coolidges blooded English setter will be ready to hunt wherever the Chief desires despite dispatches saying the President will not visit Kentucky this autumn. Williams oversees the pup's education at the Bank of Lafayette.
Indianapolis report says W Lee Smith and Joseph Huffington’s brother are among those from whom siren cars were recovered by State Police in an interstate theft ring probe. A Cadillac tied to Smith and a Packard to Huffington's brother were seized in Terre Haute. Six arrests, including Edward Traugott and Harry Sussman, with bonds set at 25000.
Roosevelt Field to Los Angeles saw nine entrants scattered across the U S as weather hampered the race. Col Art Goebel piloting Yankee Doodle finished the non stop cross country run in about 23 hours 60 minutes, though he did not win the top prize. He claimed the east to west record, while earlier he and Harry Tucker set a west to east mark of 19 hours 58 minutes.

Patrick J. Lynch, longtime New York city firefighter known as Paddy Lynch, died at 76. He rescued 41 women and children from the General Slocum fire in 1904, ferrying them from the burning steamboat to safety and earning the congressional lifesaving medal for his actions.
Governor Walter Maddock, who recently became chief executive after the death of A. G. Sorlie, announces he will seek reelection as a Democrat. Maddock had previously allied with the Republican party and was elected lieutenant governor two years ago on that ticket.

United Press dispatch from New York notes first indications of the tornado's severity in Porto Rico. French Cable Company lines were partly restored as the first messages from San Juan arrive, signaling ongoing recovery efforts and continued coverage.
