In Du Quoin Illinois a mother in her 20s gave birth to twin girls connected at the chest. Hospital administrator Arthur B Allaben said the mother Mrs Gary Degenhardt of Collinsville is doing well and the babies were not in a critical condition weighing about 5½ pounds each. It was unclear if the twins share any organs and the father works as a clerk for the Wabash Railroad.
The hurricane bore through the Bahamas with 150 mph winds and aimed toward the Florida east coast from Cape Canaveral to Key West. Nassau boarded up as communities faced high tides and widespread warnings, while Florida issued a hurricane watch for the lower east coast.

A 44-year-old Delphi man, Jack Grimm, lost his right arm when it was caught in farm machinery at his father O. E. Grimm’s farm. The amputation was performed at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lafayette after the accident near a silo elevator.

Rear Adm. William L. Knickerbocker testified before the Senate subcommittee that the Defense Department now buys many antibiotics abroad to save money. He noted five foreign contracts in Italy and Denmark since last year, totaling about 1.9 million dollars. The Pentagon action follows claims of U S drug firms wielding monopolistic prices on antibiotic drugs.
Detroit witnesses recount a fatal daytime stabbing on a street corner. John Casterlow, 23, a former Muncie Central standout, was fatally stabbed and beaten after an alleged provocation by Edward L. Harvey, 22. Harvey was held for investigation as investigators pursued the case.

State police report a man named Billy H. Jones, 36, of Kentucky was captured in Columbia Missouri with a check writing machine and go typewriter. He admitted passing fraudulent payroll checks up to 200 dollars for a non existent Wilson and Wilson Pipeline and Heavy Equipment Co. An accomplice James Johnson is jailed in Sullivan for public intoxication and says Jones hired him. four bogus checks were passed in Linton.
The Sullivan circuit court clerk issued marriage licenses to John E. Shepherd of Jasonville route two and Gladys Ann Howard of Indianapolis. Also granted to Bobby Lee Wolfe of Dugger and Mary Kathryn Reynolds of Sullivan route three.
