Tonight will be clear and cool with a low in the low 60s. Wednesday brings mostly sunny, pleasant conditions with a high in the low 80s and a low around 60s. The forecast also notes a 92 degree high and 67 degree overnight low on Monday, with 71 at 7:30 a.m. Thursday and Friday stay mostly sunny.
At 3 30 p m Sunday a house trailer on Black Creek road burned extensively. Virgil Dean owner of the property found the fire. The occupants were away. Fire started near the hot water heater. Linton Fire Department responded and put out the blaze.
Indiana police in Richmond began a ticket-writing protest Monday over pay, led by a Fraternal Order of Police spokesman seeking more than the 4 percent increase approved by council. The FOP said its members voted to undertake the ticket speedup though not a bargaining agent. In a separate matter, defense attorney Nile Stanton asked Marion County judge Michael Dugan to disqualify himself from the Anthony Kiritsis shotgun abduction case, citing alleged prejudice in rulings.
Keith Stephens, age two, was located Sunday morning in a weed and brush patch about 1.5 miles from his Linton area home after a 14 hour search. Donna and Gary Clifford expressed relief and gratitude to deputies, volunteers, and officials who aided in the night-long search.
The Agriculture Department plans to authorize production of mechanically deboned meat with ground bone and require explicit labeling on packages and shelf placards. Separately, the Defense seeks leniency for 12 Hanafi Muslims sentenced for armed kidnapping and murder tied to the Washington building takeover, while prosecutors push for life terms and a 123 year total for Hanafi leader Hammas Abdul Khaalis.
Jerry Lewis Telethon at Linton center raised over 7000 in cash and pledges aided by a fish bowl drive that brought in 1600. Young people led fundraising with help from some adults and junior civitans. The effort mirrors broader community projects like Operation Pride showing youth concern for others.
A rash of accidents in Greene County over the long weekend caused no serious injuries but substantial property damage. At 3:30 p.m. Sunday Tina Crutchfield 17 of Crane lost control on Baseline Road near Bloomfield, car total loss with lacerations and contusions to Crutchfield and Brant Dilman. Investigating Trooper John Moran. Later at 5:20 p.m. Monday Michael Potts 23 and Timothy Weaver 20 collided on Highway 57 near Scotland after Potts allegedly grabbed the wheel during a fight. Weaver sustained knee injuries and Ava Weaver 15 was treated and released. Damages totaled $1600 to the Weaver car and $600 to Potts. Motorcycle riders Michael Hardisty 25 and Rebecca 23 suffered abrasions after sliding on Highway 54 near a farm tractor. Deputy Sheriff Bill Collins noted the incident.
Congress returns from a monthlong recess to a crowded calendar including a budget deadline and a Panama Canal dispute. The Banking hearings target Bert Lance amid calls from Sen. Ribicoff and Rep. Percy for Lance’s resignation over alleged irregularities. The aim is to adjourn by mid October with budgets in effect by Sept. 15.
Pasadena reports Voyager 1 lifted off from Cape Canaveral atop a Titan Centaur rocket with all instruments and booms deployed as scheduled. Engineers praised the mission's flawless start, noting it differed from Voyager 2's earlier issues and delaying launch to ensure proper booms locking into place.
Panamanian leader Gen Omar Torrijos arrives for a signing week as 24 Latin American heads of state attend ceremonies for two canal treaties. The accords would hand over canal control by 2000 while preserving U S defense rights and boosting rents and tolls. Torrijos meets President Carter in talks at the White House area after arrivals at the OAS event.
Volunteers from the Linton Junior and regular Civitan clubs manned telephones for the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon. Terri Pitcher contributed a full shift for the second year. They collected over $7,000 in pledges and fishbowl contributions, breaking all prior center records.
