Funeral services for 25 year old WWI veteran David Hopewell were held at McHugh Funeral Home Shelburn. He died after falling 75 feet from an Illinois Central Railroad trestle near Louisville while painting. Survived by wife Gladys, daughter Diana Sue, sister Phyllis Ann, and brothers John Floyd and Lloyd. Burial in Little Flock cemetery.
United Press reports Indiana's Labor Day holiday toll rising to 10 after two days. Victims include Robert Goodnight and Jack Modesitt on a highway near Fort Wayne, plus Darwin Bell near Oakland City and several others in crashes and drownings across the state.
The 1948 Indiana high school football season kicks off Friday with many teams starting action. Dugger loses to Brazil 32 6 after a 7 6 halftime lead, Hall scoring the Dugger touchdown. Friday features Linton versus Gerstmeyer at Linton field with many lettermen returning, and games including Mitchell at Bedford Huntingburg at Bicknell Sullivan at Bloomington Dugger at Bloomington University and Brazil at Evansville Central.
Pfc. James McGhee, son of Mrs. Jennie McGhee of Linton, now stationed in Yokohama, Japan, has been transferred from the paratroops division to assist the base chaplain, choir leader, and organist.
Miss Betty Burris of Coalmont and Jacob Passen of Jasonville were treated at Freeman-Greene county hospital after a Sunday crash on State Highway 59 two miles northwest of Jasonville. Passen was released after facial lacerations, Burris remained overnight with severe cuts and bruises. A bus driver Wilbur E. Davis of Terre Haute was questioned. he denied crowding the other car into a bridge abutment after the Terre Haute Eagles game was rained out.
A U S Air Force recruitment team led by Capt. Richard Maloney will interview eligible local men in Bloomington on Tuesday and Wednesday for the aviation cadet program. Applicants must be unmarried males 20 to 26 years old with two years of college or equivalent education, sound health, and good character. Interviews and tests will be conducted at Room 203 Post Office Building Lipton after qualification checks.
A hospital report lists multiple medical events over the weekend including appendectomies for Jackie Bennett Phyllis Wilkes and Mrs Genev a Tribby healing after surgery, several births such as Marie Ann Towns Lee Lola Jean and Walter David, plus numerous admissions and weekend dismissals across Jasonville Linton Bloomfield Dugger and Crane with names of patients and residents.
Two Linton 4-H club girls received red ribbons for Food Preservation entries at the Indiana State Fair. Bedford Bolton earned red in Subdivision D and Virginia Hawkins red in the Fifth division, per the State Fair Board.
Mrs Margaret Jennie Miller 95 oldest member of Friendly Grove Baptist Church died at 12 03 Sunday morning at her granddaughter’s home west of Glenburn after eighteen months bedridden. Born Vigo County Sept 30 1853 she resided in Linton area. Survived by daughter in law Mrs Edgar Miller and grandchildren Merrill Dean Norris Miller Miller. Funeral Tuesday 2 pm Welch and Cornett Funeral Home with Rev Bert Sanders and Rev Beecher Critchfield. Lebanon Cemetery.
Bloomfield jeweler Albert Carrell died this morning at Robert Long hospital in Indianapolis after months of illness. His body was sent to Jenkins and Sons Funeral Home in Bloomfield. Funeral arrangements and survivors to be announced Tuesday.
Funeral services for Charles Grass aged 60, brother of Linton mayor Arthur M. Grass, will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Poindexter and Wampler Funeral Home in Sandborn, following his death last Thursday in Niagara Falls New York.
Fort Worth Texas police turnkey Ralph Conner 54 has a hobby during spare moments embroidering towels. The ex baseball player finished several embroidered towels between locking up prisoners.
President Truman opened a Labor Day campaign swing in Grand Rapids and other Michigan cities with a broad attack on the 80th Congress. He accused Republicans of catering to real estate lobbyists while failing to curb prices and provide low cost housing, urging voters to back Democrats in November. He praised Senator Arthur Vandenberg yet warned that Americans face a binary choice on November 2.
Leon Hubble won a ten lap heat at Jungle Park after rain washed out the feature. He qualified third with 23.95 behind Bud Dombroski 23.91 and George Tischener 23.41. Hubble placed fourth in the opening ten laps, then won the second heat. consolation and feature race set for Oct 3. On the prior Sunday Hubble won a heat and a feature at Bloomington.
Funeral services for Columbus Bun Richards 73 a long time Sullivan County resident were conducted at Morris Chapel church with Rev Stanley Sipes officiating. Burial followed in Fairview cemetery. He died Friday night after two weeks of illness. He was born April 5 1875 in Sullivan County and lived mostly in the Linton area. Survivors include wife Margaret Squires Richards three sons Hallie Otha and Guy two daughters Hazel Stewart and Chloe Smedley one sister Malinda Perigo sixteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. Newkirk Funeral Home of Pleasantville handled arrangements.
Communists storm Berlin City hall and cancel the fourth attempt to convene the City Assembly as Soviet sector police seal the building. American reporters are beaten and threatened while about 40 Western journalists and 200 Germans are trapped inside.
A steady drizzle postpones the Linton Lions and Band Parents parade until 1 30 PM. Hundreds who parked downtown are disappointed but the speaking program will proceed at the High School park as planned.
Bob Griffiths carried off top honors at Lee Sherrard park skeet range on Sunday with 75 consecutive pigeons broken without a miss. Other scores listed include Hayek 25 Hunter 23 Osborn 22 Wolfe 21 Fullom 20 Gambill 20 Buzzy Wolfe 20 and Orman 19.
The Linton City Fire Department answered a noon Sunday call at Eleventh and B streets southeast where a car caught fire. Firemen arrived to find the blaze already out with only minor damage reported.
The Delta Alpha Class of the First Christian church will meet in the church basement Tuesday evening at 6 15 for a covered dish supper and installation of officers. Members are invited to attend.
