The Lawrence County 4 H Fairgrounds hosts a weekend Indian Pow Wow with public performances at 2 30 p m on Saturday and Sunday featuring fancy dance champions and famous singers from Oklahoma and other Indian lands. The lineup highlights tribes such as Miami Chippewa Osage Sioux Comanche Winnebago and Sac Fox.
In 1632 Cambridge authorities mandated each resident attend the monthly town meeting within 30 minutes of the bell ring or face a fine. The ruling reflects early colonial community discipline and civic duties.
Batesville 18 year old Harry Fredrick was held for homicide investigation in Dearborn County Indiana over the shotgun death of his 43 year old father William W Fredrick. Harry said he fired from behind his pickup after his father shot at him and endangered his wife and child. The shooting occurred near the Fredrick home three miles southwest of St Leon.
Ace Royal of Bloomfield Itc earns the American Farmer Degree from the State Future Farmers of America Executive Office. He and his father farm about 1 300 acres, raising purebred Angus cattle and feeding hogs. Royal, a Worthington Jefferson High School graduate, is the Greene county FFA member to reach this level, with ceremonies at the National Convention in Kansas City on October 13.
About 100 National Guardsmen moved into Natchez Mississippi entering in a 14 truck convoy with steel helmets and carbines after a racial bombing last week. The city, a Ku Klux Klan stronghold, faced a planned mass march by African Americans demanding equal treatment. The U S role expands as FBI officials monitor renewed civil rights activity in nearby areas.
About 30 U S Air Force B52 bombers struck a guerilla held rubber plantation and jungle stronghold 20 miles north-northwest of Saigon. Ground forces killed 22 Viet Cong near Quang Ngai city while five guerrillas were captured with 46 suspects. Artilery units and air support followed to weaken the Ho Bo woods area and surrounding patrols.
The Census Bureau estimates Indiana's population on July 1 at 4,885,000, up 4.8 percent from 1960. Indiana's 1965 traffic fatalities rose to at least 935 after a third death from a late week accident. Michael W. Rentz, seven, of Economy, died at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie from injuries suffered August 27 in a car-truck crash at a rural Randolph County intersection. His parents Charles and Merlyn Jean Rentz were killed in the same collision.
The United States urged India and Pakistan to end their Kashmir fighting after United Nations Secretary General Thant appealed for a cease-fire. Ambassador Arthur Goldberg, speaking for the United States, backed Thant’s plea and called for an immediate halt to hostilities and full cooperation with UN observers.
Hurricane Betsy drifted northwest in the Atlantic, threatening the Bahama Islands with 100 mph winds mainly off to seaward. United Mine Workers of America increased pensions for 69 000 soft coal miners from 85 to 100 dollars per month. Trustees led by John L. Lewis approved the rise effective October 1 as the welfare and retirement fund balance grew from 114 to 140 million dollars. The fund adds a 40 cent royalty on every ton of coal mined.
Dennis Smith an 18 year old automobile accident victim from Bridgeport Illinois was reported in good condition at Union Hospital Terre Haute after a southbound trip on Route 67 near Marco when his VW apparently fell asleep veered off the road struck a parked Hasler Lumber Co car owned by Mrs Fern Hasler causing total losses to both autos and leaving Smith with a broken left leg and possible internal injuries no charges were filed by state police trooper C L McIntosh.
The Gil mour No. One school reunion and neighborhood homecoming will be at the Jacksonville city park shelter house Sunday. Rev. Noah Beadle announced the event with a 12 30 p.m. basket dinner and refreshments for registrants. A gift will honor the oldest attendee and the farthest traveler as organizers expect the largest turnout in eight years.
