The City of Linton in Greene county filed a complaint for permanent injunction in Greene circuit court against County Treasurer John M. Moore to halt county taxes on city owned utilities. A new state law taxes municipally owned utilities, with a constitutional challenge led by the Indiana Municipal League awaiting decision. If upheld, Linton could owe about 7,000 dollars in utility taxes.
Rome dated Sept 2 The fascist government banned Jewish students and teachers from all Italian schools as the first move to remove Jews from Italian cultural life. The cabinet ordered Jewish members resign from academies institutes scientific and artistic associations by Oct 16. The decree targets Italian Jews unlike yesterday’s expulsion of foreign Jews who arrived in 1918 or later.
Dr and Mrs E V Bull of East Vincennes street entertained Thursday with guests including Mr and Mrs Marvin Gray, Mr and Mrs Fred Gray and son Barry of Detroit Michigan, Mr and Mrs Bert Gray and son Dickie, and Mr and Mrs Earl Gray and children Laverne and Bobby of Oakland California.
Four year old Calvin Dean Meyers of Decatur Illinois was killed near Heisman Warrick county Indiana when he jumped from a slowing truck driven by his uncle Kenneth Bruce. The boy was at his grandmother Mrs. Frank Toole’s home to attend his grandfather’s funeral.
Deputy Coroner Vincent Morantz urged a coroner's jury to indict Philadelphia county prison officials the superintendent Frank Craven and guard captains for criminal negligence after four convicts died in the punishment cellblock. The names include William B. Mills James McGuire and guards Francis Smith Robert Moran and Alfred Brough.
Lyons schools announce two new hires for the current year Miss Madge Pickard will teach the sixth grade and Mrs Eva Hunter Howard will teach English and Latin joining a staff led by Principal Clarence Keller The roster includes teachers across grades and subjects plus a coach and vocational staff for the year.
The Linton horseshoe club defeated the Bloomfield tossers by 33 ringers and 339 points on local courts. Linton pitchers included Perkins Wolfe Haseman Tubby Geatches Wessel Hunter Hayes Weaver Bailey Wilson and W Trinkle. Hayes was high ringer with 115 ringers and 239 points. Sullivan tossing club visits Linton tonight.
In observance of the Leber Dey holiday banks of Lintor will be closed and the Deily Citizen will not be issued. Local businesses will close, the post office will run on holiday hours, and only lock box mail service will be available to patrons.
Officers for the coming year were installed at the Linton Frank Courtney American Legion post Auxiliary session on B street northeast. New officers include Mrs Jess Flack president and Mrs Willis Pirtle first vice president. Reports from the recent state convention were shared by Mrs Max Friedman and Mrs John Ecker. A citation was awarded to the local group for strong membership gains. A presentation by Mrs Suffal, who wrote the speech, accompanied the gift to Mrs Friedman. Ice cream and cake were served by the new officers.
Funeral services for Mrs. Ella S. Hasler 70 of near Newberry will be held at 2 PM Saturday at the Methodist church in Newberry with Rev. T. J. Scott. Burial in Newberry cemetery. Born January 20 1868 in Indiana, she lived most of her life in Greene and Cass townships. Survived by three daughters Anna Jones Abba Thomas Ruth Rayburn and son Paul Hasler, plus three sisters and one brother. Funeral arrangements by Sappenfield Funeral Home, Newberry.
Mrs Earl Cooksey and daughter Jolly Ann of Greencastle route 3 returned to their home Sunday after spending a few days last week with Mr and Mrs E W Cooksey and family.
Sergeant and Mrs Harold White of Schofield Barracks recently left Terre Haute after visiting Mrs White's parents Mr and Mrs W E Booker. They will travel to Indianapolis to see Jack White before moving to Fort Benning Georgia to make their home.
One million railroad workers may strike within a month as C. J. Goff of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Engineers predicts a decisive strike vote. He notes the carriers plan a 15 percent wage cut and that men likely will quit on October 1.
New York figures tied Tammany Leader James J. Hines to mobster Dutch Schultz in a case over political protection. Lawyer Max D. Steuer testified that Hines asked him to investigate federal income tax changes affecting Schultz. District Attorney Thomas E. Dewey seeks corroboration from Steuer and other witnesses.
Paris says reserves will stay under arms until German mobilization of over one million ends September 23. In Poland, German minority leaders push toward a united German bloc of about 800000, while Berlin says no hasty moves on the Czechoslovak minority issue after Berchtesgaden talks.
The Terre Haute Independents, a picked team from Terre Haute semi pro squads, will face the Linton Miners on Labor Day at the City park diamond. Managed by J. B. Cook the Terre Haute club has won fourteen and lost four. The Miners prep for a busy weekend with a Sunday road game against the Dugger Red Sox after a 4-2 win earlier this season. Players will depart Kroger corner at 12 30 Sunday.

Post Office Inspector A. F. Burt cited a giant insurance fraud ring with 25 fly by night mutual assessment associations operating in 20 states. Victims, including Mrs. Bertha Taylor and a Midwest farmer's widow, lost small settlements from fake policies. Authorities expect criminal proceedings shortly targeting the firms.
Richard Mills humorist and attorney headlined the Greater Linton club September banquet at the First Methodist church. The event featured small business motions, remarks by local leaders, and Bert Brown’s orchestra prior to the meal.
George James trapped three black bears weighing 250 to 300 pounds. Townsfolk reported seeing partial ridges and a pair of foxes on the highway near Phillips Maine.
In Marysville California two masked men seized 55 year old Mrs. W R Meeks from her ranch home after ransacking it. Authorities including National Guardsmen police and FBI tracked suspects who allegedly demanded $15000. The couple was bound but Mrs Meeks freed her feet to move toward a car before the men fled.
The Center of Population canning company in Linton today reached its 250000th can as output runs at over 15000 daily amid tomato shortages. Prospects improve as tomatoes arrive faster, with future runs possibly using number 21 1/2 cans depending on demand. Workers stay busy preparing the new Center of Population tomato pack for distribution.
Mrs. Everett Schlegel of Clay City was taken to her home this afternoon. Miss Marjorie Johnson of Linton route 2 was dismissed from the hospital. Lee Myers of Solsberry route 1 was taken to his home today. Delores May Geatches, six year old daughter of Mrs. Fred Geatches of Jasonville, underwent a minor operation this morning. Leanne Hagerman, six year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Hagerman, underwent a tonsillectomy this morning. Catherine Passen of Jasonville was dismissed this afternoon.
