Ezra Blevins a well known farmer and coal miner living eight miles northwest of the city shot himself through the heart at the home of his son in law at 6 o clock this morning. He was 55 and survived by his wife and three children. The coroner of Sullivan county will conduct a further inquiry and funeral arrangements are incomplete.
Bedford Indiana report of Milton N. Lytton from Hoosier James Lytton, a World War I navy veteran aboard USS Dakota, killed in Port Au Spain during a cafe quarrel with a Spaniard. Lytton died shielding a friend Richard Geisse, funeral led by American sailors, burial in a small American cemetery. Sergt. Lytton of Culver Academy is his brother seeking details and possible return home.
Chicago reports that President Lee of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen challenged the railroad labor board's power to call off or even investigate a strike. He argued the board's decision is binding only after hearings, and that workers may leave service if they reject wage cut decisions. Lee acknowledged the power to call off the strike but promised to reveal when future wage cuts become a factor.
The gulf storm floods Tampa's business district to three feet, shutting industries and isolating the western coast of Florida. No deaths reported though power plants darken cities. St Petersburg and St Augustine wireless stations also out of commission.
Chicago October 26 The U S labor board urged postponement of further wage cuts by railroads to avoid a strike, saying a wage ruling could not come before July 1922 as rules and working conditions remain unsettled. Rail carriers insist wage reductions are necessary before freight rates can drop, while unions push for action.
Governor McCray warned against a strike and said Indiana would not sit by if freight service halted. He noted 500 motor trucks ready for service and citizens offering equipment and drivers to keep commerce moving, while public sentiment would oppose disruption. He urged settlement to clear the atmosphere.
A call issued to 150000 congregations by the Federal Council of Churches urges that war is not necessary and that a warless world is possible. It calls for a strong Christian witness against armaments and urges a far reaching reduction in military spending with rational, peaceful settlement of disputes.
Mrs. Newton Dudley of Marion Heights, Terre Haute, was seized by two men while returning from a rear door. She was dragged to an orchard, bound to a tree, gagged with her apron, and robbed of $30. Her husband found her later in a semi conscious state. Sheriff A. A. Wolfe and Deputy Lidster responded. She later recovered enough to identify the assailants and recount the attack.
The intruders searched the house and took 430 in cash while not disturbing other belongings. Mrs. Dudley could not identify the robbers as darkness prevented seeing their faces and no description could aid investigators.
Mrs. Margaret Crump sues Charles F. Crump for divorce and 35000 in alimony in Columbus circuit court. She alleges he gave joy rides to wealthy widow Mrs. Ella Brockman, and she was assaulted at Crump’s fishing camp near Readington when confronted.
Washington news reports the Minnesota Supreme Court refused to review the convictions of A. C. Townley and Joseph Gilbert. They were convicted of conspiracy under state law to interfere with the war and face prison time as sentenced.
A conference of District No. 11 officials and John L. Lewis, president of the United Mine Workers, was held at district headquarters to settle labor disputes in the Clinton field. Lewis arrived at noon Tuesday and returned late Tuesday afternoon.
In Washington on October 26 the Senate signaled repeal of the excess profits tax via test votes. Senator Reed’s amendment to extend the tax was defeated 39 to 27 with Democrats largely for retention and four Republicans joining them. Hitchcock urged retention, arguing the tax targets excess profits and would force corporations to share above-normal earnings.
The committee of Lloyd George Austen Chamberlain Arthur Griffith and Michael Collins met two more hours without finishing its task. No date was set for resuming talks. They discussed Sinn Fein consent to join a British commonwealth and the Ulster question tied to Irish unity.
