Indiana Coal Association and involved companies announce Indiana will supply the Nation's Tree in 1973 for the Christmas Pageant of Peace in Washington, D.C. The tallest Indiana tree will stand near W TWO studios on U.S. 41 south of Farmersburg, with 53 smaller trees from strip mine land in Ohio guiding the Pathway to Peace.
Linton officials report two Sunday incidents. A Dorrough 159 South Main Lineon compact car was damaged when a second vehicle fled the scene. Phillip L Poe 22 of Sixth Street Northwest was cited after a collision with a fire hydrant and street sign at Highway 59 and F Street Southwest.
Rain soaked large areas with over four inches in some spots as a low pressure system stalled over Indiana. Temperatures dipped toward freezing with snow flurries from Michigan to the Ohio River and daily totals in the 2 to 3 inch range across many locales. Unofficial reports cite 3.7 inches in Linton with a week outlook predicting 8 to 12 degrees below normal and light snow possible midweek.
United Press International reports a sharp holiday rise in deaths during the 102 hour Thanksgiving period. totals reached 899 across all causes with 743 traffic deaths, led by California 60 and Texas 41. Indiana records heavy losses with multiple fatal crashes amid dense fog and rain.
UPI reports B52 bombers struck the Viet Cong headquarters near the Cambodian border about 65 miles northwest of Saigon and pounded a Central Highlands stronghold for six straight days. Ground troops pressed a sweep against a suspected North Vietnamese division amid monsoon rains slowing operations.
S/Sgt. Max Woodsmall, 32, platoon leader in the 1st Cavalry, was killed Monday in combat in Viet Nam the Defense Department released Friday. He served in Viet Nam nearly a year after joining the Army in 1958 and previously in the Marine Corps from 1950 to 1954. He is survived by his mother Iva Woodsmall of Elnora, one daughter Debbie of Indianapolis, four brothers and one sister. Other Indiana casualties listed include PFC John L. Godfrey of Ligonier and PFC Jerry D. Sabens of Saem.
Claude C. Sluder, 18, of Coalment, arrested on a charge of leaving the scene after his car allegedly struck an auto owned by Max Griffith parked in front of Griffiths home at 224 Hickory Street Jasonville Friday night at 8 45 pm. The driver of the hit car was said to be Sluder.
Marci Jill Aranson, the largest and last-born of the Aranson quintuplet girls, died at Magee Women's Hospital in Pittsburgh. She was the fourth quintuplet to die, with doctors noting brain damage and lung hemorrhage from respiratory trouble as the cause. The sole survivor, Roni Sue, remained under hopeful prognosis.
Two crashes reported in Greene County. Jess Boarman, 64, lost control when brakes failed at 8 05 p m Sunday at the junction of highways 54 and 67 in Switz City his truck struck a tree and blocked the highway for about an hour no injuries or arrests reported. Landon Chaney 18 Owensburg drove into a fence on highway 54 six miles east of Bloomfield causing only minor damage. Trooper Jerry Grant investigated both crashes and reported no injuries.
Officials from the Indiana State Highway Department announce highway 54 in West Linton will close Tuesday and Wednesday for Milwaukee railroad crossing repairs. Linton mayor A M Risher meets with officials to plan a city detour along Fifth Street to Glenburn Road past Rest Haven while the highway work proceeds.
Three accidents reported by the Greene County Sheriff’s department Saturday were linked to heavy rain. The 4:30 p.m. crash on highway 67 near Worthington involved a diesel tractor trailer driven by Theodore Zambron and a pickup driven by Raymond Keasling, with $400 damage to the Keasling truck. At 6:30 p.m. on Main Street in Owensburg, Jackie Chaney’s car struck a parked pickup and was hit by Ruth Baker. Baker’s car sustained $200 damage. At 11 p.m. Emmitt Fish’s car hit a water patch on highway 67 north of Switz City, followed by Dennis Knoy’s collision with Fish’s vehicle. Fish’s car suffered $200 damage and Knoy’s was heavily damaged. No injuries or arrests reported.
William Glenn Edwards 24 of Terre Haute escaped Vigo County Jail by sawing bars with hacksaw blades. He fled from a second floor cell using a bedsheet rope before 6 a.m. EST. Edwards, held on 25 000 bond for the April abduction of a Terre Haute couple, and accomplice Robert Motz faced trial.
The McCord Corporation in Washington completed a 22,500 square foot addition to its air conditioning plant. Plant manager Robert A. Bowers announced the expansion this week. The firm reported net sales of $101,286,702, up 34 percent from last year, and operates twenty-one plants across North America.
Cotton Sublett, district sales manager of Dowell Chemical Company Evansville Division, to speak at the Linton Rotary Club luncheon at 12 15 p m Wednesday at Klusmeer's Linton. Sublett, program chairman, will present an illustrated talk on the discovery of oil and its development, with emphasis on well drilling and processing.
