At the Automotive Trade association opening, E S Jordan of Cleveland argued durability and reasonable price will determine car survival. Based on talks with about 30,000 industry people, he said the shift is toward service cars rather than pleasure cars. He noted $1.65 billion in auto deliveries in nine months and a per capita purchase rate of 10.45 per 100 million population despite farmers being out of the market.
Washington reports federal tax returns reveal sharp contrasts between military spending and consumer pleasures. Tables show candy and gum at 418000000, soda and confections 3834000000, perfumery and jewelry 959000000, tobacco 1151000000, and entertainment spending by baseball fans theatre goers and concert attendees at 897000050.
Six persons were killed when their automobile crashed through the Woodvale bridge guard rails over the Pennsylvania railroad cut and plunged 50 feet to the tracks below. The car overturned on impact, pinning occupants and causing instant deaths, authorities reported.

Jason Campbell filed suit in Indianapolis seeking 15000 from the Indianapolis Baseball Club. He was captured near Phoenix during a Santa Fe train robbery attempt and had not been seen since escaping McNeil Island guards weeks ago. The Justice Department backed the Leavenworth transfer over returning him to McNeil Island.
New York November 17. Immediate ten percent cut in carload freight rates on farm products for six months was agreed by U S railroad executives. The reduction covers the nation except traffic wholly within New England and takes effect within about ten days. Loss to railroads is about 55 million dollars, with prior concessions reducing revenue by roughly 175 to 200 million annually. The plan aims to offset wage cuts already in place.
The United States Court of Appeals in Chicago heard the dispute between miners and operators over the check-off system in West Virginia and Kentucky. Attorneys sparred over union dues, alleged conspiracies, and the role of nonunion labor as they argued whether the injunction should remain. No decision date was set as the appeal proceeds to a permanent ruling.
Pittsburgh, Nov. 17. Samuel Rea, president of the Pennsylvania Railroad, sent a letter stating that wage reductions are necessary due to current economic conditions. He argued rail wages represent about half the cost of transportation to the public and must be reduced before other costs.

In Rockford Illinois on November 17 robbers attempted to intercept a payroll but failed. A local construction company with a Wedron Illinois contract sent the payroll by airplane to the town to avoid theft.
