San Francisco on November 14 reports Fatty Arbuckle went on trial for manslaughter in the Virginia Rappe death. A 65 member jury panel includes 13 women as selection begins amid heavy crowds and pretrial disclosures.
With both sides ready, a fragile agreement to keep the past lives of Miss Rappe and Ar Buckle buried has been reached. The air remains charged as questions linger whether the accord will endure.
Net operating income of main line railroads in September totaled 87 174 000, per a statement by the Association of Railway Executives from monthly reports to the Interstate Commerce Commission. The month yielded a 4.6 percent return on investment, but year to date only 2.9 percent due to earlier deficits, with maintenance expenditures noted as not being normal.
New York Nov 14 Sixty thousand garment workers were called out on strike this morning protesting the piece work system and an increase from 41 to 48 hours a week to take effect today. The International Ladies' Garment Workers' union and 3,000 shops are involved. All arbitration efforts failed.
In Michigan City Indiana hundreds of girls at the high school will report a pledge banning kissing caressing love notes or familiarities until after high school and college days. They will elect officers and form a permanent auxiliary for school activities. The movement began with Dr Charles E Barker an expert on sex problems who plans similar girl organizations in Indiana high schools.
Washington dispatch outlines a busy week as Congress nears the end of the extra session. The Senate will finish debate on the Newberry Michigan seat and Willis Campbell anti beer bill with a Friday vote on the latter. Maternity aid legislation for mothers and infants moves up Friday in the House under a special order. Conferees on the tax revision bill resume work, aiming to finish soon, with final action after major items pass. Senate hearings on tariff revision and inquiries into Haiti, Alaska reform, and railroad issues also resume. Railroad representatives will discuss proposals to repeal the 6 percent rate guarantee and to restore state rate powers.
Grisencastle Indiana November 14 Wilbox Priest and Durward Davis Bainbridge garage men report an auto loaded with about six armed negroes stopped them on a state road east of Bainbridge. After a search the men were allowed to proceed, then the caravan appeared to divert and another car suspected to carry liquor followed. They believed the group sought to avoid Sheriff Sears of Putnam county.
Mrs. Chester Bigger, 70, perished in a fire at her Pocahtontas residence after guiding her blind and paralyzed son to safety through smoke and flames. The son was severely burned and doctors said little hope remained for his recovery.
Cloudy conditions persist with slightly colder air tonight. The forecast calls for cooler temperatures across the south portion for tonight and Tuesday with no significant precipitation expected.
New York reports the Southern Cross arrives from Rio de Janeiro in 11 days 54 minutes, beating the former record by nearly eleven hours held by the American Legion. Cabin passenger Edward White, once of Chicago, is hospitalized for a bullet wound in the mouth found two days out. His condition is serious.

Early today a New York tenement blaze left at least nine dead with five bodies found near a doorway on the fifth floor and three more discovered later all unidentified. Two men and one woman were seriously injured while thirty residents suffered abrasions and shock as occupants clung to window ledges and cried for help.

Mrs. Benjamin Blackiston of New Albany used a razor to slash her 18 year old daughter Mary Evaline and attacked her 3 year old daughter before husband restrained her. The injured girl was taken to Steward's hospital and is expected to recover. Neighbors note odd behavior for over a week despite family hush.
