In Fairbanks Alaska a wartime boom returns as workers and soldiers flood the city. Prices rise with a high cost of living, wages surge, and Russian pilots fuel demand by spending freely on goods from hats to shoes. Local economy thrives on government pay and wartime commerce.
The Indiana District Office of Price Administration announced ceilings on anti-freeze prices amid shortages. Semi permanent anti-freeze may run 1.40 dollars a gallon or 0.35 per quart, non permanent 1.00 per gallon or 0.25 per quart, and permanent types 2.65 per gallon or 0.70 per quart.
American 3rd army tanks and infantry captured Chateau Salins and pressed eastward, seizing nine German strong points in the Moselle and Seille valleys. Patton's forces took Thezey St. Martin Delme plateau and advanced toward Vivi ers, 17 miles east of Pont-A-Mousson, with Meurthe river gains by French and American troops in the south.
The 1944 Greene County Tuberculosis Association Christmas Seal features a modernistic letter carrier. Artist Spence Wildey explains the image honors all postal workers and marks 40 years of postal involvement in the campaign. Mrs Cleo Stockrahm of Jasonville died in Freeman Greene county hospital at two this morning after major surgery Thursday. Born in Greene county December 27 1913 she was 30 years 10 months and 14 days old. Survived by husband George three sons George Carlton and Donald at home mother Rozella Terhune and several siblings. Funeral plans pending with Meyers Funeral Home Worthington.
Patricia Kay Faulk, nine months old daughter of Mr and Mrs Dallas Faulk of Jasonville, died Thursday at Union Hospital Terre Haute after four days illness. Survived by parents two brothers Bobby Gene and Jerry Dallas and sister Helen Fern. Body to McClanahan Funeral Home Jasonville then to family home. Funeral Sunday at two at residence with burial in Peavey Cemetery.
The Linton library joins nationwide observance from November 12 to 18 with the theme United Through Books. The public is invited to visit and view the expanding collection during hours 12:30 to 5:30 Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday.
John Bowen of A street northeast is confined to Freeman Greene county hospital in critical asthma condition. His wife Mrs Bowen is en route home from Arizona after visiting their son.
Democrats gained a senate seat in Vanderburgh district and added 13 seats in the Indiana House, while Republicans retained a large majority in both chambers. The 1945 session will feature Ralph F. Gates as governor and James as Senate president pro tem. House GOP leadership remains strong with Hobart Creighton and George W. Henley returning to top posts.
In Natick mass thieves broke into the Flintlock Antique Shop taking only modern revolvers and shotguns while passing by valuable antique firearms. No other items were reported stolen and no injuries occurred. Local police investigate the burglary seeking clues and suspects.
Claude C Wells of Lyons and Lois Louise Goad of Newberry underwent tonsillectomies this morning. A six pound five ounce girl named Kathleen Nesta was born to Mrs George Koesler of Bloomfield today. Hobart Cooper Jr. was discharged this morning.
Prime Minister Churchill confirms Germany has bombarded England with V-2 rockets over weeks. He notes casualties and damage are not heavy so far, and that reports of vast destruction are exaggerated. The rockets travel fast from 60 to 70 miles high, with limited public warning.
Soviet dispatches report massed artillery began a large scale bombardment on East Prussian and Baltic fronts signaling a major winter offensive. Army film series announces release of Birth of the B-29 a sound film detailing the B 29 super bomber development construction and hidden work across secret plants. It will be shown starting November 11 and available to war plant employees and chosen organizations via the Fifth Service Command Industrial Services Officer in Columbus Ohio.
Frances Eileen Huckleberry nine is killed when struck by a car as she gets off a school bus near Waugh Indiana. Roberta Lee Best twenty, Emma Jenkins sixty five die when a car leaves State Road 11 east of Elizabeth and hits a tree. Raymond Ward thirty three dies from coal mine injuries at Peabody after a Thursday accident.
In Ripley County Missouri President Roosevelt and Governor Dewey tied with 1743 votes each in the election results reported from St Louis. The tally shows a dead heat between the two national leaders.
