A daily column gathers miscellaneous items from Greene County history and local life. Highlights include birthdays, historic events, remarks on Dr. Jack Turner and a tribute poem, plus forest service brochures and notes on a proposed Linton bowling team.
Persons registered to take the scholastic aptitude tests at Lin ton Stockton High School Saturday should be at the school no later than 8 30 a.m announced today by Principal Paul H Brackemyre. The persons planning to take the test are reminded to bring their admission slips.
The 1966 Indiana Soil Judging contest will be held at Worthington this Saturday with 36 4 H and Future Farmer of America teams from ten counties represented. Registration is at 8 a.m. at Worthington High School, transport to the judging site by bus, and an awards program at 2 p.m. at the high school auditorium.
Early snow shoveling duties proved deadly for multiple Hoosiers across Indiana. In Muncie Thomas Mason and Grover Waymire died of heart attacks while shoveling. Fort Wayne Albert Schoenle also died clearing snow at home. Aurora James Miller perished at a church. Additional deaths linked to weather occurred in Richmond and Vevay, with traffic deaths near Elkhart and Indianapolis attributed to slick roads.
Temperatures in Indiana fell to the teens after record early November snows. Overnight lows reached 17 in Fort Wayne and 18 in Cincinnati and Indianapolis, which was two degrees shy of a November 4 record. Snow lingered on the ground as leaves floated atop a deep white blanket. Forecasters warned of light snow possible Saturday in the northern two thirds of the state with little expected accumulation.
Autopsies scheduled for four victims found in a southside Indianapolis apartment incl among them Odessa Marshall 41 and Betty Humble 44 with two children William 10 and Michele 8. Police doubt foul play. malnutrition or asphyxiation suspected as cause after bodies remained undiscovered about five days with no food found.
Monroe County Sheriff Russell Duncan announced another arrest in the motorcycle and automobile theft ring. Twenty year old Jack Fisher is jailed as investigators probe the ring. An automobile and several motorcycles were recovered from an abandoned quarry near Weimer Road. divers found more submerged vehicles tied to the juvenile theft ring.
Plans for a Democrat Candidate Caravan to tour towns in the county were announced by caravan chair Sheriff A Dale Horn. Participants meet at Switz City Central School gym parking lot before 10 a.m with decorated vehicles, then depart along a route through Lyons Linon Lyons road 59 Linon 54 Lone Tree 48 Jasonville Worthington Bloomfield and back to Switz City.
J Wesley Williams of Hymera southern vice commander of the American Legion will be guest speaker at a joint Linton American Legion Post and Auxiliary meeting at the Local Post Thursday night November 10. A chili supper will be served at 6 30 p.m. preceding the program. All Legion and Auxiliary members and their families are invited.
Five traffic fatalities in Indiana on Thursday include a double death on the Indiana Toll Road near Elkhart. Alfred Beimborn and Louise Beimborn, both killed while walking from a stalled car, were struck by Abe Schwartz’s out of control vehicle. Richard Luft, 19, of Rosedale, died when a car hit a utility pole near Parke County along a U.S. 41 corridor. three others injured.
Mr. and Mrs. Lex Thompson landowners along Highway 67 between Worthington and Spencer won an $8 000 damages settlement in Owen circuit court. The trial opened Monday with testimony, a five woman seven man jury deliberated about two hours after closing arguments.
In Saigon area and over the North, Viet Cong waves clash with American forces while rice stocks are seized. U S troops report heavy losses for the Viet Cong as air strikes, B52s, and ground defense push back seized supplies totaling over one million tons.
President Johnson called his seven nation Manila mission highly successful and said it showed unity among allies in supporting troops, defending borders, building a prosperous Asia, and pursuing peace. He predicted results and pledged manpower for Vietnam, aiming to curb North Viet Nam aggression.
A nineteen year old Linton girl involved in a Washington accident Wednesday escaped injury. Betty J. Cullison of Linton route 2 was driving east on West Main Street when she turned onto Eighth Street Northwest. Neal O. Wayman of Washington route 2 failed to stop and struck Cullison's car. Police listed no damage estimate or injuries.
Commander Frederick W. Chase, recently assigned to the Crane executive office, previously led at the U S Navy and Marine Corps Reserve Training Center Little Rock Arkansas. He was commissioned in the Naval Reserve and became a Naval Aviator in April 1964 and has served on shore assignments and ships including McAlester Oklahoma Naval Ammunition Depot.
President Johnson rests at his Texas ranch to prepare for a second operation in 13 months. Doctors say the not serious surgery at Bethesda Naval Medical Center will occur within 15 days, likely during the week of November 20. He previously had gall bladder surgery at Bethesda on October 8, 1965.
The United States and the Soviet Union signed a long stalled agreement to start commercial air service between New York and Moscow likely next spring. Pan American and Aeroflot will operate nonstop 4,200 mile flights linking the two capitals.
The Indiana Department of Financial Institutions denied Bloomfield State Bank’s petition to establish a branch in Eastern Greene County after a Wednesday hearing in Indianapolis. Bank official Stanley Barkey said a denial letter has not yet been received and declines to comment on future submissions.
