Hoosier state coal industry shuts down indefinitely as 28,000 plus miners idle. Only a few domestic and shipping mines remain active, output plummets from 100,000 to 2,500 tons daily. Indiana and Illinois facilities face fuel shortages and broader strike risk. no official strike order issued yet.
Forty thousand union miners in the Pittsburg bituminous coal district were to be called out on strike Monday if District No. 5 United Mine Workers acts on President Robert R. Gibbons advice. The move targets coal companies that will not observe the union check-off provision, with Gibbons proposing a general strike to begin November 7 at noncompliant sites.
Gardiner notified that the association would abide by an injunction issued by Judge A. B. Anderson in Indianapolis on October 31 against continuing the check off system. Gibbons said this violated the working agreement between District No. 5 and the producers' association, and he would convene the executive committee to seek a strike order.
John J. Lewis president of the United Mine Workers of America will join the conference on limitation of armaments as a member of the advisory committee. He received a telegram from Secretary of State Charles Evans Hughes confirming the appointment and has wired his acceptance. He plans to attend the initial session on November 9. He and Samuel Gompers of the AFL are the only labor representatives on the committee.
Federal Judge A B Anderson ruled against the check-off system but District 8 Brazil region miners remain at work. International President John L Lewis of the United Mine Workers indicated the policy is not used in black coal regions. Five Brazil mines idle Friday as workers refused to cross the mine switch to the mines half a mile away.

Washington November 4 The administration targets a total federal expenditure reduction of 439 million dollars for fiscal year 1922, exceeding the earlier 350 million projection. President Harding informs Congress via a letter to Speaker Gillette detailing revised estimates that place next year’s outlays at 3.94 billion, down 94 million from the August 10 projection.
Two masked gunmen robbed Opell's lunch and bakery in the Harrison bank building Vincennes Indiana 1:30 this morning. About $60 reportedly taken. Night manager Dewey Arnold and chef Charles Pierce were threatened. Police Atwood Kirk and Owens investigated with no trace by 2 AM. Authorities suspect an automobile getaway.
