Helicopter Crash Kills Three on Guadalcanal Deck

On the carrier Guadalcanal a UH2B helicopter fell during takeoff. Rotor blades swept the deck, killing Manning Mc. Cutchen of Suffolk Virginia and two others while injuring twelve. The helicopter spun off and lodged in mooring lines. two crewmen survived. A small radioactive fragment was found but deemed non dangerous.

Absentee Ballots Received by Greene County Clerk

Greene County Clerk Claude Story reported about 400 absentee ballots have been received for the November 8 election with an expectation of 200 more by the deadline. Most are from voters unable to attend polling places. servicemen away from the area are less represented. The deadline for filing absentee applications is November 5, and the clerk's office will stay open until midnight Saturday to accommodate voters.

Bloomington Man Dies in Wreck

A light snow collision on Indiana 37 north of Bloomington killed Donald W. Wright 23 of Bedford. Ann Wagner 23 of Martinsville was seriously injured. Police noted snow and no witnesses. Earlier, Dave Lawson Harden 21 of Attica died when his truck struck a bridge on a Warren County gravel road, the truck overturning and pinning him.

Washington Firm Lands Large Defense Contract

A Washington firm district weather gear and turbine blade orders totaling 14.3 million dollars were announced by the Defense Department before the November election. The U S Rubber Co of Washington Indiana received 2.52 million for weather overall and General Motors Allison Division in Indianapolis 3.3 million for turbine blades. Most contracts surfaced via incumbents seeking reelection.

Firefighters Die In California Brush Fire Tragedy

Ten members of the El Coriso Hot Shots died in Pacoima Canyon as they battled a steep hillside blaze in the northwestern San Fernando Valley. Highway 63 Opens For Traffic

The new state road 63 between Clinton and Terre Haute opens to twenty four hour traffic with barricades removed this week. A Wabash river bridge and two smaller bridges are completed. Minuteman Missile Malfunction Ends With Destruction

A Minuteman ICBM launched at Vandenberg Air Force Base malfunctioned and was destroyed by the range safety officer. The Air Force could not determine the cause immediately. Scattered brush fires started but caused no injuries or damage to personnel or structures.

Man Killed While Felling Trees in Anderson

A Middletown man, Dewey Flynn, 59, was killed Tuesday in Anderson when a tree he and his son Stanley, 23, had cut fell to strike him after another tree they felled pushed it over. Stanley Flynn was present but not hurt.
