A long note on the rise of service and distribution in the economy cites a Twentieth Century Fund study showing 59 cents of each consumer dollar goes to distribution services while 41 cents pays for production. It compares 1870 and 1930 labor shares, cites automotive distribution growth, and ends by praising local Linton shoppers and returning readers.
The Linton Retail Merchants' Association will hold a 7 o'clock meeting tonight in the Linton Public Library. It is billed as one of the most important of the season and all members are urged to attend.
United Press tally shows 500 fatalities over Memorial Day weekend from Saturday to Tuesday. Autos and heat caused many deaths with 105 drownings at beaches. Illinois New York and California each saw heavy losses. Indiana reported 28.
Funeral services for Mrs. Lillian McCorkle aged 43 were held at the family home in Southwest Linton with Rev. R. J. Staats in charge and burial in Fairview cemetery. Born December 7, 1895 in Greene county, she spent most of her life there and is survived by husband George, one brother William Hackett and four sisters Ada Foulk Addie Inman Emma Lucas. Newkirk Funeral home of Pleasantville handled arrangements.
Maj. Gen. George Van Horn Moseley, retired, tells the Dies committee that the United States faces a Communist threat managed from the White House. He calls for the president to purge government communists and their supporters and to authorize military action to protect life and property.
First games in the Linton junior league are set this weekend. At 2:00 PM Thursday the West Linton Cubs meet the Daily Citizen-News team. Friday at 2:00 PM the North End Indians face the South Linton Velvets. Saturday features a B game between the Southeast Enders and Northwest Enders.
Miss Adah Jones attended the speedway races in Indianapolis on Tuesday, observing the events and pace of the competition.
Berlin May 31 German and Denmark signed a treaty of non aggression fixing their common frontier. Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop and Danish Minister Herluf Zahle signed at the foreign office. The move follows similar deals with Latvia Estonia and Lithuania as Hitler expands the peace front.
President Roosevelt arrived in Washington from Hyde Park with Secretary Morgenthau to prepare for King George VI and Queen Elizabeths visit and a cross country trip that could affect the 1940 campaign. He disclosed at a press briefing that he had received a favorable political briefing from Postmaster General Farley.
U P congressional leaders told President Roosevelt they expect to finish major legislation and adjourn by July 15. Speaker Bankhead said consensus supports a conclusion by that date and Roosevelt would delay his mid June west coast trip if needed. Leaders will provide more definite word next week.

Reported death of John Burlin Page aged 7H years at his daughter Mrs. Cora Keasley home in Bicknell. He had long illness. Survived by brother James Page and sister Mrs. Dora Reintjes of this city. Funeral at 2:00 PM Thursday in Bicknell with burial in Bicknell Cemetery.
Greater Linton club reveals a 6 20 Thursday gathering at the local First Christian church. A guest speaker from out of town will address Looking at Sutton From the Outside. Members are urged to attend as a major event of the year. Banquet will be served by church ladies and the Recreation orchestra led by Bert Brown will perform.
A 51 year old man in Berkeley California attempted to kill himself with a .25 caliber pistol but incidents with a pocket comb a pneumonia jacket and a thick undershirt diverted the bullet. He was arrested for discharging firearms within city limits.
A 46 year old man four foot eleven inches tall attempted to turn in a fire alarm in Toledo Ohio but could not reach the box. He was arrested on a disorderly charge with a stiffer false alarm penalty in the city.
William Vaughn, 17, sailor from Indianapolis, goes on trial in Los Angeles for the hammer slaying of Clarence M. McCann, 33, a Long Beach organist. McCann’s body was found March 26 at the base of a cliff near San Pedro after he was beaten and tossed over Petters Point.
The House adopted a gag rule by 221 to 53 to limit debate on the Townsend old age pension bill and moved into general debate. Administration leaders expected a final vote late today to defeat the bill for the session.
Lawrence Bridgewater, 35, who was granted parole on Sept 30 1958, left Summit Prison Farm late yesterday and remained at large today. He had been sentenced Oct 20 1986 to one to ten years for grand larceny from Lawrence County.
The State of Indiana seeks a venue change from Greene county judge Powell for the 1933 murder case of Mrs. Ellis near Jasonville. Judge J Raymond Powell will not preside. Judge Robert L. Mellen to act as judge in Bloomfield starting June 12.
In Ufton Nervet near Reading, villagers still receive free bread yearly since Queen Elizabeth’s time. On the annual day, housewives go to Ufton Court where the squire distributes loaves: four pounders per adult and two pounders per child.
Dr B F Chambers, 71, a physician at Lyons, died by suicide today. The news note appears in a city obituary report stating the physician’s death and age with no further details.
Doc Shannon led the ground crew for Thomas H. Smith a 24 year old Los Angeles airman who vanished after a Portland Me departure United Press dispatches report no word on his whereabouts Shannon a Detroit motor worker and two companions worked on the plane and speculated Smith had only 37 to 39 hours of fuel remaining Shannon hoped he was on the ground somewhere possibly in England awaiting word in Portland.
State police using ropes and stretchers rescued four young Albany couple who fell 150 feet at Thatcher Park in the Helderberg mountains. John Canon, 27, and Lillian Hardy, 25, were pulled from the cliff at dawn after six hours in darkness. Canon toppled over the edge around 9 p.m. last night while the group wandered from a picnic.
Mrs Amy Gilbert of Indiana polis is spending a few days with her daughter Mrs Jesse Fiack and family.
Dr. B F Chambers a 71 year old Lyons physician was found dead in his office from self-inflicted gunshot wounds believed to be suicide. He had practiced for over 50 years, moved to Lyons 36 years ago, and is survived by his widow Nellie V Chambers and two sons Laurel and Galen. A letter found at the office explains his pain from long illness and his wish for forgiveness. Dr. Sam Rotmas of Jasonville led the inquest, which ruled death a personal safety related gunshot injury at about 10:00 this morning.
