Born October 22 1893 in Lyons he lived near Linton most his life and worked in local coal mines last at Buck Creek. Survived by widow Virginia Vandenede Shoptaw a son Thomas Shoptaw Jr a daughter May Mary Felker three brothers three stepsons two stepdaughters three grandchildren ten step grandchildren and a reared nephew. He was born March 4, 1893 in Spencer, served in World War I with Company C 112th Infantry, Pennsylvania division, and worked as a supply clerk at Minnehaha coal mine. Survived by widow Fern L. Lenning Howe, a brother John R. Howe, two sisters, three nephews and two nieces. Funeral Wednesday at 3 30 in Welch and Cornett Funeral home with burial in Fairview cemetery.

Winston Murdock was chosen mayor of Linton in a special council meeting. The vote was three to two with Republicans backing Murdock and Democrats backing P H Ohern. Murdock, still employed by the Linton Milk company, pledged to hold both jobs until ordered to quit. He was sworn in and later reappointed department heads as the city plans a June 6 vacancy meeting.
