Funeral services were held in Columbus for Virginia Cunningham 94 a former Linton resident who died Sunday after a short illness. She was survived by three daughters Miss Clara Cunningham of Los Angeles California Mrs Lucille Rothgibb and Mrs Lillie Mc Laughlin of Columbus and two sons Cloyd and Clarence Cunningham of Columbus plus 16 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. A granddaughter Mrs Claude Burress and sister-in-law Mrs Carrie Cunningham survive in Linton.
Senate debate over a peacetime draft faces possible delay as Sen. William Langer proposes a civil rights amendment. Southern lawmakers threaten filibuster, while House Republicans try to bottle it up. If stalled, passage chances dim and House action remains unsettled.
Lee Pope, injured in an automobile accident on May 16 near Gosport on state road 67, is reported to be recovering satisfactorily.
Three marriage licenses were issued by the Greene circuit court clerk at Bloomfield. Recipients include Winfred Eugene Page and Ellen Chamberlain of Linton, Joseph Christopher McHenry and Carolyn B. Hendricks of Bloomington route five, and Laurel Malcolm Hardisfty of Bloomfield route four and Marjorie Ann Weaver of Solsberry.
Indiana plan allocates 2,833.41 to Linton from a 5,000,000 cigarette tax fund for road projects. Governor Gates proposed the distribution, with Sullivan and Greene counties and cities like Indianapolis Princeton Bloomington Brazil Clinton named in the breakdown. Budget officials backed the plan despite one dissent, while Senator Vermillion objected to using funds for roads. Allocation based on population for counties and road miles for counties, with $4,000,000 to counties and $1,000,000 to cities, to be distributed immediately.

Linton officials plan two more test wells to locate a new municipal water supply. Two wells on Pryor Alrea farm near the pumping station produced limited water. a third six inch well may begin soon to confirm a sufficient yield at an estimated minimum cost of 9 000 dollars.
Indiana political action heats up as Henry F. Schricker may announce his availability for the Democratic nomination for governor. A noon meeting of Hoosier Democratic mayors in Indianapolis is set to hear from him, with many mayors backing a possible draft if he does not declare.
John McBride of Dugger underwent major surgery this morning. Jerry Murdock of Linton had a tonsillectomy. Barbara Briggs underwent a tonsillectomy and was moved to Kelzenberg in Jasonville for further care. Frank Roberts of Linton was dismissed yesterday. Grace West of Bloomfield and Bobby Frederick of Linton were discharged this morning. William Pirtle Jr. was taken to the grandparents’ home. Maxine Jones was taken to her home in Jasonville.
More than 20 cars lined up at Indianapolis Speedway for May 26 time trials hoping to join the 500 mile race. Only 19 openings remain as 23 cars passed qualifying. Rex Mays topped practice at over 131 mph, while Johnny Mauro spun but recovered to pit with a bent wheel. Lou Welch and H C Henning fielded multiple entries as fans watched veteran blue crown era teams in a bid to dethrone last year’s Moore dominance.
The Indiana Sheriffs Association will launch an intensive highway safety campaign within weeks led by Sheriff Charles Mansfield. A white tour car with a loud speaker and safety literature will visit schools and key sites, assigned to local sheriffs. The group endorses the Indiana Traffic Safety Commission program and plans to hold its 1948 convention in Fort Wayne in late September.
Funeral services for Mrs. Elia McCullaugh of Linton who died Tuesday morning in Freeman Greene county hospital will be held at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the Linton Methodist church with Rev. R B Baldridge officiating. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery. The body was moved from Welch and Cornett Funeral home to the family residence at 439 A street northeast where friends may call. It will be in state at the church from noon Thursday until funeral time.

President Truman told House Speaker Joseph Martin that without federal aid for education the American system risks a serious breakdown. He urged Senate action on a bill for federal assistance, proposing $300 million in his 1949 budget. He argued aid would strengthen democracy despite defense costs and noted state funds alone cannot meet rising education needs.
Radio history was made in Linton when the first television receiving set was tested successfully. Jules Borelly of Indianapolis brought the self assembled set for a weekend visit with his mother Mrs Hermina Borelly. The set picked up a Cincinnati broadcast and offered clear reception from 1:30 to 3:00 pm and 6:30 to 8:00 pm.
The House appropriations committee proposed a total Interior Department budget of 375.7 million dollars for the new fiscal year, cutting the reclamation bureau to 226.8 million and signaling limits on its electric power expansion while urging irrigation focus.
The Appropriations Committee approved 250 000 dollars to combat slow burning underground coal fires and 291 000 dollars for a survey to prevent mine flooding. The money would support the Bureau of Mines in fiscal 1949 pending Congress and presidential approval. Rep. Ivor D. Fenton called it the first step toward recovering millions of tons of coal. Bureau officials warned several fires have burned for years and will exhaust coal veins if not extinguished.
Funeral services for Mrs. Mary A. Lamb age 87 who died Monday night at her Scotland home were held today at the Scotland Methodist church with burial in Scotland cemetery. Survived by six sons and three daughters along with three brothers and one sister.
