Local proposal to organize a fair association in Linton gains traction with farmers stockmen and race horse men. The note mentions home town figures Gerald Landis and Dr Dennis F Jackson and recounts small anecdotes and a payday remark.
Members of the Linton Retail Merchants' association are urged to attend a 7:00 PM meeting at the public library. The organizers say a matter of great importance will be discussed.
London May 25 The British foreign secretary returns from the League of Nations council to attend a cabinet meeting on negotiations to bring Russia into the British-French security front. Proposals include a defensive alliance among Britain France and Russia and mutual aid against attacks on adjacent states. Confusion remains about Russia talks but inclusion in the anti aggression block is taken for granted.
A capacity crowd is expected tonight at the Linton-Stoeckton high school auditorium for the 1939 senior commencement. Dr. Robert Phillips of Purdue University will deliver the address. Reserved seats expire at 8:00 p.m. and attendees should arrive early. The program begins at 8. Also last night the junior senior prom crowned Miss Anna Lee Owen queen and Jack Lederer king, with magician Jimmy Trimble and Doe Thrasher's orchestra providing entertainment.
Herb Wilkey escaped Pike county jail by sawing through bars to avoid $100 alimony and $210 child support. Sheriff Goodman found the break at dawn. Judge Woods had ordered payment by today or 320 days at Pendleton. Police searched for Wilkey with no location reported.
Four students at Linton junior high received annual honors from the Linton Frank Courtney American Legion post during a school convocation. Winners include Marguerite Clark and Rosalie Francis girls and Charles Edward Borders and Marion Tislow boys, cited for honor courage leadership scholarship and service.
Felix McWhirter Indianapolis banker and Republican finance official testified to a House committee that his inquiry into Jewish connections of several figures served to obtain factual information for his own satisfaction. He cited a letter to James Erwin Campbell asking if Hulls wife is a full blooded Semite and questioned Alf Landon and William Allen White's alleged Semitic connections.
Japanese reports say reinforcements are being rushed to the Manchukuo Outer Mongolia border after three days of heavy fighting near Nomonhan. Aerial fleets are involved as Domei dispatches describe Mongolian and Manchurian forces clashing along the frontier.

Mrs Ambrose Edmondson of Jasonville also underwent a major operation this afternoon. Mrs Raymond Baker of Kol en admitted for treatment. Mrs Homer Radcliffe of Bloomfield admitted for treatment. A daughter weighing seven pounds and fifteen ounces was born Monday night to Mrs William J Deatrick of Worthington. The baby has not been named yet. Miss Esther Trotter who recently submitted to a major operation was taken to her home this morning. Rube Williams of Worthington was dismissed Monday afternoon. George Peak of Linton route 3 was taken home this afternoon.
Herbert Burch of Linton was cleared by Indiana State Police after his car struck Eather Hall 23 of Bloomington on State Road 37 between Bedford and Oolitic killing Hall instantly. A coroner's report cited a fractured skull. Hall survived by two brothers and a sister.
Donald Dailey an 18 year old among five Bicknell youths pleaded guilty to grand larceny in the Bloomfield Gayle Lehman liquor store robbery. Judge Herman M Robbins sentenced him to one to ten years in the Indiana Reformatory in Vincennes.
Boss Thomas J. Pedergast, long a Missouri political figure, prepared for his 14 month sentence for income tax evasion. Judge Otis granted a one week postponement to enable Pedergast to arrange his finances before commitment to the Leavenworth federal penitentiary in Kansas.
Secretary Henry A. Wallace told the National Retailers Forum that private capital flow into investment channels is essential before solving agricultural surpluses. Also, the Pan American Yankee Clipper completed its maiden transatlantic air mail service from Marseilles to Southampton arriving at 5 45 a m CST.
Representatives of the United Mine Workers and the Harlan County Coal Operators association met briefly in Harlan Kentucky and recessed without announced progress on the region’s coal strike. The recess was at the union side’s request for other pressing business and may involve individual owner negotiations.
A League of Nations committee ordered Prof. Karl J. Burckhardt to resume his post as high commissioner in Danzig to uphold the League administrative setup until a Poland Germany agreement on the city's future is reached. Germany seeks withdrawal. Poland gains leverage by offering League withdrawal in exchange for Polish rights in Danzig.
Donald McCullough, 23, of near Shelburn, injured when a home made aircraft he piloted crashed from 200 feet east of Baker Mine. He suffered a possible skull fracture but was reported on the road to recovery at Mary Sherman hospital. The plane, built from parts, belonged to Glen Thompson and was demolished after the crash.
The Squalus sank in 240 feet of water ten miles southeast of the Isle of Shoals with air for days. Navy officials noted a new rescue lung for each man and spare lungs. The Falcon and destroyer Lemnes departed New London for the Shoals to aid in raising the sunken submarine.

Prosecutor seeks the death penalty in Sullivan Circuit Court for James Jackson Batchelor charged with killing Mary Ellis near Jasonville in 1933. The trial began today in Sullivan.
Judge J. Raymond Powell of Greene Circuit Court proclaims June 4 to 10 as No Divorce Week. No divorces or hearings will be heard to spotlight marriage permanence and the cost of broken homes to society.
Miss Esther Stamats of the Chicago YWCA told Northwestern University coeds at a vocational conference that the average college trained woman is a business dad because she cannot take it. She described college women as snobbish, holding grudges, jealous, and unable to adjust to the commercial atmosphere.
State prosecutors opened the Indiana case in Sullivan circuit court, seeking the death penalty for James Batchelor in the 1933 murder of Mrs. Mary Ellis. Norval K. Harris leads Batchelor’s defense, challenging confessions and calling for innocence beyond doubt as jurors are sworn. A separate witness separation ruling was entered and Ethel Saucerman testified as the trial begins.
