A column recalls past town curfew bells in Linton and the old city hall fire bell for saloon closings before modern sirens. The Linton Stockton High School Band parents and band members will gather Tuesday evening at 7 15 in the old gymnasium for a social meeting. Refreshments will be served.
An inmate in San Antonio Texas named Jiggs entertains by imitating people. He dances hats, plays piano, and smokes a corncob pipe as he mimics others, showing surprising cleverness in his routine.
Officials announce the official opening of daily supervised recreation at High School Park from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Roy Williams and Charles Haskins will supervise. New equipment includes a merry go round maypole and slides. Lights will aid night activities at baseball games. A junior softball league will form soon as FFA plans summer play.
The Daily Vacation Bible School of the Linton Evangelical United Brethren church will start Monday morning. Lead by Rev William Medecalf the program runs 9 to 11 am daily for two weeks. Ages five to fourteen are invited to attend the Bible study handicraft and recreation program.
Linton merchants and business men were urged to display flags Saturday in observance of Armed Forces Day. The call came from the Greater Linton club in a public announcement.
Bob Hess, local pro, said Linton municipal golfers will travel to Sullivan for a rematch with Sullivan Elks players. He noted Linton recently beat Sullivan on their east course and urged all matched players to go to Sullivan Sunday at 1:00 p.m. CST and to contact him for details.
Secretary of State Dean Acheson declared the United States will maintain an interest and stake in European affairs beyond the 1952 end of the Marshall plan. Speaking aboard the Britannic in Liverpool after western big three and Atlantic Pact conferences, he also affirmed ongoing economic and military aid to Western Europe and security for Greece Turkey and Iran. He backed pooling of Germany and France steel and coal industries.
Indianapolis May 19 Some 20 race drivers seek to qualify for the 500 mile Indianapolis speedway race over Memorial Day weekend. They will chase three new qualification records to join the 33 car field. Rookie Walt Faulkner of Long Beach set a pole pace and ran a lap at 136.013 mph.
Gary Indiana May 19 A young steel worker Edward Owens 20 missing since last night. Eugene Sulie 21 of Hobart found in Owens car at Carnegie Illinois steel mill with bloodstained knife. Police say Sulie silent and a hunt for Owens ordered near Lake George and Deep River areas.
Rex Rollins of Owensburg, 20, is hospitalized in Freeman Greene County after a shotgun misfire while cleaning the weapon. The shot penetrated near his armpit, tore toward the heart, and caused shock and blood loss. He received transfusions and showed slight improvement. If he recovers, nerve damage may leave his left arm useless.
Linton Merchants routed Cass 8-0 at the local diamond. Ross pitched seven innings for Linton while Mercier finished the eighth and ninth. They plan to face Riley Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Linton diamond, per managers Lowery Millick and Guy McNew.
General Omar N. Bradley warned in San Francisco that Russia will likely possess enough atomic bombs in a few years to deal a devastating blow anywhere. He outlined a four point must program for defense and global resistance during a Chamber of Commerce and Commercial Club address on the eve of Armed Forces Day.

Paul David McDonald of Jasonville had a tonsillectomy this morning. Carl Apple of Sandborn had a tonsillectomy today. Mrs Max Holmes and baby returned home to Newberry. Mrs Robert Moses and baby returned home to Worthington. Mrs Barbara Ellis and baby went home to Lyons. Mrs Victor Ault of Odon was dismissed.
Alpha Delphian members gather at the Conservation club Tuesday at 9 am for a May Breakfast. Each attendee should bring their own table service.
London reports two more Russian ships sighted off the coast bringing the total to nine in 24 hours. The vessels passed Dover in the afternoon, heading for the Atlantic, while seven ships lingered 40 miles from Portland last night. Admiralty notes this may be the first Baltic to Black Sea convoy passage of fishing vessels since World War I.

Senate showdown over President Truman's fair employment practices bill looms as Southern Democrats block the motion to end debate. The vote to cut off debate stood 52 to 32, 12 short of the 64 required, with Northern Democrats and Republicans failing to unite.
Greene county Shrine club held a social gathering with thirty members at the Linton Municipal Golf Course clubhouse. Weaver and His Cornhuskers provided entertainment and a square dance featured. No meetings will be held until September when a family night at Shakamak park is planned.
Southern Indiana leisure area Shakamak Park Beach will open to the public at 9:00 a m Sunday morning. Park superintendent Mrs Leila Cooprider confirmed lifeguards will be on duty daily.
