A sizable audience attended the Triad Alpha and Beta chapters May song festival at the First Christian church. About 100 voices performed with out of town guests including Sullivan and Jasonville chapters, Melody Maids of Bloomfield, and Indiana University baritone Ward Martindale. Charles Foster won first in the national high school music contest, performing with pianist Betty Jean Brewer. requests for thanks were extended to multiple churches for farewells.
In Monts France the Duke of Windsor will hold court for 158 reporters to reveal final wedding plans with Mrs Wallis Warfield. the timing is expected in early June. spokesman Herman L Rogers declined to confirm details and promised a typed communique after lunch at the castle tomorrow.
In Castel Gandolfo Italy May 17 the pontiff Pope Pius XI near age 80 was ordered by his personal physician Prof Aminta Milani to cancel audiences until at least Wednesday and take a much needed rest. He reportedly suffers varicose vein trouble and a fluttery heart complicating other ailments.
Dick Merrill transatlantic flier was chosen as official starter for the 25th annual 500 mile race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on May 31. Speedway general manager T. E. Myers said Merrill will fly to Indianapolis with a group of New York sports writers. He regularly pilots between New York and Miami.
The Linton Shuffle Board Club held its first meeting of the year at the public library Friday evening. John Wilson was elected president with Mrs. Max Friedman as vice president and Harry McAfee as secretary treasurer. The club aims for weekly Tuesday and Friday nights at City park courts starting 6:30 p.m. WPA recreation officials back the effort and many tournaments are planned for summer. The next meeting is 6:50 p.m. Tuesday at City park.
The Supreme Court refused to condemn windfall tax provisions of the 1936 revenue act and upheld the procedure for those seeking to recover processing taxes deemed unconstitutional in earlier AAA rulings. The May 17 dispatch notes a mixed outcome for New Deal policy.
A Japanese tender Dojima Maru exploded at Queen's Pier Hong Kong killing sixty people most of them Japanese. Rescue crews searched debris and authorities investigated the blast cause.
Clyde Grass connected with the Sherwood Templeton Coal company underwent a major operation today and was reported to withstand the procedure satisfactorily. Robert Workman, a Springville boy, has been taken to his parents home.
U S Senator M M Logan of Kentucky announced three modifications to Roosevelt's judiciary reorganization bill and predicted one would reach the senate floor. He suggested a compromise plan could gain nine of 18 votes and noted administration leaders may be pushing for change while others favored a six justice Supreme Court increase.
Edward Hasler 84 lifelong Greene county resident died this morning at 10 at his son Vear Hasler’s Bloomfield home after months of illness from complications of diseases. He leaves children Lester Victor Wear Lulu Ed Summerville Mrs Edgar Wright Simeon Reed Ollie Holmes and John Dowden plus a brother Rosanna Mullis. His wife passed away in 1929.
A six o'clock dinner Friday evening honored Miss Vera Haney of Flint Michigan. Hosts were Mr. and Mrs Homer Haney and family of Ellis community with a guest list including Mr. and Mrs Charles Asrey and Wilfred, Sullivan. Mr. and Mrs Lester Haney and family, Terre Haute. Mr. and Mrs Ernest Haney and family, near Jasonville. Mrs Glenn Stockrahm, Linton. Alec Imrie, Ellis. and the Haney hosts.
The Thursday night party for O D Clayton's Baptist church Sunday school class has been postponed to Thursday of next week May 27.
The Knights of Pythias lodge will meet at 7:30 this evening in K P hall for its regular session. First rank work will be presented. All members are urged to be present.
Naomi Steele is appointed administratrix of the estate of John Steele, deceased, with a bonding requirement of 1000 dollars. United States Fidelity and Guaranty Company acts as the surety on the bond.
An all star cast from Linton High School's 1997 senior class will stage Lunatics at Large a three act mystery comedy in the high school auditorium with performances Wednesday and Thursday at 4 and 7 p.m. Tickets available at Avery Murray's drug store.
Linton high school senior Charles Foster won the national title for flugelhorn at a Columbus Ohio contest held weekend. He performed Carnival of Venice before judge Dr Frank Simon of the Armco band. Betty Jase Brewer accompanied on piano.
Clarence G. Hunley 41 died unexpectedly after a short illness at 8 30 Sunday night. He lived at 440 J street northwest and worked as a shovel operator for Mid Continent Coal. Hunley was born September 11 1886 in Gibson county Indiana and moved to Linton from Vincennes five years ago. He belonged to Royal Arch Masons No 41 and FP A M Lodge No 326 of Bunkie La. Surviving are his widow Clara A. Hunley two stepchildren four brothers and four sisters several grandchildren and his step mother Ceccelia Hunley. Burial plans await the family.
Twenty seven members of Scout troop 56 spent a weekend at the Linton Scout camp. Under Scout master Roy Glenn with assistants Roy Harbett Ben Coleman and Marion and George Parks they worked on the road to the cabin before enjoying games and evening music. Scouts Harbin Gox and Walton provided the musical entertainment with Coleman Parks Harbett and Parks delivering songs as the scribe notes.
The American Legion post invites residents to the Great Olympic Shows at the Criss Myers Lot at A and Fifth streets northwest. The weekly meeting is canceled Thursday as members work the carnival every night. Kid Day Tuesday offers free admission 3:30 to 7:40 p.m. with special ride and show prices. Commanders urge members to attend at 6 p.m. in Legion outfits.
Ward Padgett Karl Mitchell and Ray Gabbard of Linton have travelled to Cincinnati Ohio to attend the annual convention of the American Mining Congress. The convention opened today with several Linton residents connected to the mining industry planning to be present for part of the event.
