Social calendar lists Neighbors gathering at the hall at 0 p.m. Party lodge No. 637 I C C F meets at 7:30 p.m. Elks Lodge convenes at the home at 8 p.m. L Eagle Lodge assembles at the hall at 7 p.m.
A dense list of upcoming meetings and events across church groups, Red Men lodges, Moose, and W A W clubs. Activities include choir practices, lodge hall gatherings, bridge and social clubs, and Sunday school parties at Mt Perigo and First M E church with times ranging from 1:30 to 8 p m and notices of refreshments.
Percy Myers hosted a Tuesday afternoon bridge gathering at her home on East Vincennes Street for members of the Tuesday Afternoon Bridge Club. Several guests attended as the club meeting proceeded with card play and conversation.
The Duke of Windsor, in a bathrobe with Wallis Warfield, listened as George VI’s coronation proceeded at Windsor Castle. He sent a telegram to Elizabeth II expressing happiness with his brother’s elevation and private life free of throne burdens. In Dublin, crowds protested the coronation, and pistol fire and rioting injured several. A separate incident at the Baker mine left Linton resident Bill Collins with serious burns from an electrical cable explosion.
Alfred M Landon former Kansas governor and Republican presidential nominee asserted that President Roosevelt s court reorganization plan would be overwhelmingly defeated if congressmen vote their convictions He argued Americans reject the notion that representatives can be bought by bribery or patronage Landon made his first public comment on the proposal in Topeka Kansas
Henry Merrill and Jack Lambie flew from Croydon to Liverpool to begin their return flight from Southport Sands with coronation pictures. David Llewellyn plans a London to Capetown record flight starting at 2 am from Lympne. Other fast film planes left Croydon for Paris Brussels Berlin Amsterdam Copenhagen Stockholm and Belfast.
In New York 26 of 35 Hindenburg victims will be sent to their homelands tonight. At Lakehurst New Jersey a federal board continues hearings on the crash cause.
Bill Johnson a Virginia gun thug testifies before La Follette senate civil liberties committee in Washington. He claims two years of hunting and beating Kentucky Coal Miners union members and wrecking meetings on employers orders, and mentions two murder indictments in Wise County Virginia.
The Walgreen plan launches a grand opening Thursday at the Linton Drug location now owned by Avery Murray. The transfer brings Walgreen policy and prices to town and preserves local ownership. G A Carlson led the installation and merchandising changes as the store gains a wider selection and lower prices.
Wa bash Valley horseshoe pitchers gather at Jasonville park court at 2:00 Sunday to organize the 1937 Wabash Valley Horseshoe Pitching League. Jasonville chosen as central site after last summer’s champions. Linton club also in the league. local tossers meet at 6:30 Thursday evening at Linton City park.
Mothers and daughters of First United Brethren church will hold a supper at 7 30 in the basement Thursday. The event invites all church mothers and daughters to attend and enjoy a special program.
Indiana coal workers and officials plan to attend the fourteenth annual American Mining Congress convention May 17 21 in Cincinnati Ohio. Topics include stripping coal cleaning mining ventilation and safety with about 4000 delegates and a trackless mine motion picture showcased alongside a large exposition of modern mining machinery.
Mrs Bonnie Davis Mellagh of White Rose underwent an appendectomy today. Leonard Myers of Marco recently had a major operation and was released. Bernard Wantland was to be moved to Bloomfield this afternoon. Mrs Sarah Starkey, 82, remained unchanged after fracturing her hip yesterday. Miss Helen Hilgedick and several others were reported recovering or improving, including Mrs May Johnson Bobby Gardner and more residents from local towns.
Alpha and Beta Triad chapters finalize plans for the tenth annual May festival of song at 7 30 PM Sunday May 16 in the First Christian auditorium. About 100 voices will perform with many out of town guests attending. Mrs Wayne Hamilton founder confirms representation. The festival features blossoms and song with members carrying flowers and wearing pastel costumes. Public invited.
The J. T. M. club will be entertained at 2 o clock Friday afternoon by Mrs. Dorsey Woodward at her home. All members are asked to be present.
In Pittsburgh on May 12 the steel industry faces a critical test as SWOC chairman Philip Murray negotiates with Jones & Laughlin leaders H. E. Lewis. The union pressuring strike threat hinges on a new collective bargaining contract matching terms already signed by U S Steel and other firms.
The Linton Rotary club met at First M. I. church basement for a weekly luncheon. Mr. and Mrs. T. Shirey, local residents and CCC camp superintendent, performed as guest artists with Shirey singing three pieces and Mrs. Shirey playing a piano solo.
Linton chapters of Triad were represented Tuesday night at a formal initiation and inspection of the Sullivan chapter of Triad at Berlin hotel in Sullivan. Thirteen new members were initiated, bringing total Sullivan chapter membership to 50. A three course dinner followed, with a musical program. Mrs. Paul Kelly directed and Isabelle Adams accompanied.
Washington May 12 Congress leaders move to subdue a House revolt threatening Roosevelt’s CCC and relief plans. Democrats and Republicans back a two year extension while a subcommittee trims $1.0 billion from WPA relief funding as the president plans a Friday return from a Gulf trip.
Funeral services set for 9 30 Thursday in Clay City for William Easter 75 a retired farmer who died Tuesday He was born in Owen county spent most of his life there He lived recently with sister Mrs Mandy Folk in Clay City Surviving are two brothers Chancey Easter of Jasperville and Wesley Easter of Worthington Four children ten grandchildren three great grandchildren and another brother and sister
Two Greene county men escaped with minor injuries after their car collided with a Chicago Milwaukee St. Paul and Pacific freight train southeast of here at Beehunter on State road 67. Driver Victor Drugman of Atlas and his companion Montgomery of Bloomfield left the wreck uninjured. the car was badly damaged and towed to this city.
A pitch-in supper will be enjoyed at 5:30 this evening by members of First Christian Church in the church basement. All members have been invited to attend.
