CHICAGO May 10 U P Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen walked off the job in a strike crippling five big railroads. Federal mediators suspended talks as Chairman Francis ONeill reported no settlement and prepared to inform the White House. About 100000 direct rail workers are affected with potential indirect losses for 400000 more in other industries. Airlines and bus lines saw surges in travel as the strike spread from east to west.

Linton Youth Wins Rector Scholarship to DePauw
Jack M. Morrison of Linton received a Rector Scholarship to DePauw University announced at Greencastle. A total of 129 high school pupils from 11 states earned these scholarships established in 1919 by Edward Rector. The awards cover up to full four year tuition for character leadership and scholarship.

Change in Weaver Funeral Announced
A change in funeral arrangements for Harry E. Weaver a 58 year old former Linton resident who died Monday night in Detroit is announced. Due to a railroad walkout the body will not be shipped from Detroit and services and burial will be held there Thursday. He is survived by a brother Clarence Weaver of Detroit and two sisters Mrs Loren Brooks of Detroit and Mrs Thurlow Allen of Lyons.
