James Sargent of Linton was admitted for medical treatment today. Frank Gravemeier of Linton had major surgery this morning. Raymond Bradbury of Jasonville is released from Mary Sherman Hospital in Sullivan after a dismissal notice.
Washington reports a $1500 enlistment bonus proposed by House Republicans to end the draft. Leo Allen backs three year terms with $1500 payoff, two year terms $1000. Senate opponents doubt it will work. Other topics include UN peace aims, rail labor act review, oleo tax debate, and limits on congressional press secrecy.
James E. Noland of Bloomington won the Democratic nomination for Seventh district congressman by a 6425 vote majority over George Gettinger of Sullivan. Final district totals show Noland 10357, Gettinger 2841, with William J. Powell also noted. He will face incumbent Republican Gerald W. Landis in the fall.
The Mt Mellick club reminds members the upcoming meeting is moved to May 14 and asks each member to bring a baby layette gift for the event.
Chicago locals of the CIO United Packinghouse Workers voted to join the nation-wide meat strike. Herbert March, regional president, announced 300 workers at Armour and Company's car shop would walk out at 12:01 a.m. Thursday, impacting Armour shipping nationwide.
In yesterday's election Stockton township elected five of nine Democratic candidates to the state convention, led by Lawrence Blevens 942 and P. H. O'Hern 848. The top five were Blevens, O'Hern, Cravens, Wright, and Duchanoy. Democratic precinct results included Moore over Cullison for precinct committeeman and Mrs. Ethel Goodman receiving four votes in Precinct No 113. Republican precinct contests followed with listed tallies across Fairplay and Wright townships.
In Washington on May 5 the Senate approved sending the oleomargarine tax repeal bill to the finance committee by a 47 to 30 vote despite opposition from Senate President Vanderberg. The move overruled his agriculture committee referral as unfriendly to repeal. Senator Fulbright accused the butter lobby of stalling the bill.
Utah bank assets at the start of 1948 totaled 592,974,543 dollars, an all time high. State Bank Commissioner J Melvin Knapp reported a gain of more than 12,000,000 dollars during 1947.
John L. Lewis accuses Ezra Van Horn of trying to delay or defeat a $100 monthly pension plan for miners 62 or older. The suit seeks to invalidate the agreed plan with Sen Styles Bridges serving as impartial trustee, amid fund doubts after a coal strike.
Evansville Indiana May 5 quiet returned after a GOP intra party clash between former mayor Manson Reichert and Ben Bartlett near a polling place. Reichert said Bartlett and another man assaulted him as Reichert drew a gun. Bartlett said Reichert threatened him. A demonstration ended when Rep. Edward Mitchell and Reichert’s son in law Don Davis intervened. Ten election board members were arrested for allegedly aiding voters in booths and released on bond to face circuit court Thursday.

U S Sen Robert A Taft led Harold E Stassen 14 to 9 in Ohio with 30 of 53 delegates uncontested and 3 452 of 5 446 precincts reporting in 11 districts Taft won two delegates in districts 6 7 16 18 21 22 and one in 20 Stassen carried districts 3 9 14 19 and 20 with two delegates in 3rd 19th and 9th districts

John Godfrey of Jasonville paid a $1 fine plus costs in Mayor Arthur M. Grass's court today. He was arrested yesterday by police on a charge of public intoxication.
In Greene County many voters cast ballots in a primary to select party nominees for fall races. Democratic and Republican tickets list candidates for Congress, judge, joint senator, sheriff, commissioner, state representative, surveyor, treasurer, prosecuting attorney, coroner, and county seats. unofficial totals show key nominations with several races decided.
Herman C. Evans led Democrats with 2703 votes and Robert G. Miller Republicans with 5402 in the joint state senate race covering Greene Brown and Monroe counties. County results show Evans strongest in Monroe and Cullum strongest in Brown with Miller leading in several precincts. Herring from Linton ran well in Greene but not statewide. Vincel Miller trailed Robert Miller in Greene by 2104 votes.
An auto collided head on with a truck near Indianapolis causing one fatality. The car caught fire and the victim wore a bracelet engraved with Ralph Weaver. The truck was driven by Russell Yarber, 21, of Lebanon, who was uninjured.
Nathan T. Brennaman aged 58 announced as state chaplain of the Fraternal Order of Eagles died in Alexandria Indiana after several weeks of illness. He was a former mayoral candidate in 1947 and had twenty years of active FOE involvement.
