Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko announces a unilateral Soviet halt on tests of all nuclear weapons pending Supreme Soviet approval The move comes amid recent Soviet tests and ahead of a planned U S test series at Eniwetok Gromyko says the ban aims to curb arms race while noting it may be reconsidered if Western powers do not join.
Five people died in Indiana accidents Friday night and Saturday. Dr. William D. Asbury 83 of Terre Haute was killed after pulling from a county road into the path of a car driven by Paul T. Boehm near Terre Haute. Stephen Geisler 53 of Indianapolis died when his car collided with one driven by Patrick Breslin 53 of Indianapolis. Herschel Tate 32 of Lisbon and George Hise 30 of Highland Park Ill died in a head on crash on US 41 south of Wake Village. Anton Blaskey 65 of Michigan City died after his car was rammed by a slow moving train in Michigan City. Six people were injured.
A meeting of Linton merchants Mayor P. H. O'Hern City Council members and representatives of Industries for Linton Inc and the Linton Chamber of Commerce will be held at 9 30 Tuesday morning at the Roosevelt hotel. They will discuss the proposed construction of a parking lot on the grounds at the old Central school building and other matters.
The Sunday fight involved tanks and mortars in the Huleh Basin on the Syria Israel border. Syria reported two killed and two wounded while Israel said two soldiers were lightly wounded and UN mediation halted further action. The clash marked the sharpest fighting since Syria united with Egypt.
A Spencer man convicted of first degree burglary was sentenced to 10 to 20 years, 17 days after his reported funeral for Robert Wayne Gose of Indianapolis. Gose, 32, was said to have died in a March 14 automobile accident and buried March 18, with a letter from his mother announcing the death. He was later arrested on a trespassing charge and linked to theft of household goods he allegedly sold. He had previously served 11 years of a 20 year murder sentence and was paroled in Illinois.
Harry R. Miller of 158 Fifth Street Southeast re-entered St Anthony's hospital in Terre Haute for treatment on Sunday. He is in Room 276.
The Indiana forecast calls for normal to above normal highs in the 50s and 60s all week with a gradual warming trend. Early readings ranged from 53 in Indianapolis to 60 in South Bend. Rain was light weekend total but fair weather expected through Tuesday with possible showers Wednesday.
A Mandamus suit filed in Greene circuit court seeks to compel Clerk-Treasurer Usrey to deduct 2 dollars monthly from each of 31 City of Linton employees for a group insurance plan and to pay all current and future claims. Hearing set for April 10. The council had earlier cut Usrey’s deputy salary, citing workload.
An Indianapolis businessman Alex Adomatis, 55, and his two daughters Rose mary, 15, and Ruth, 19, were believed aboard a two engine plane that vanished after radio contact was lost near Macon Georgia. Air Force helicopters joined land searchers but fog and rain forced a midnight halt.
The trial of the State versus Selena Manson Tonie Lucille McFerrin and J C Jones of Indianapolis for conspiracy to commit a felony and shoplifting was rescheduled from today to April 9 on the defendants motion.
The Linton Fire Department fought two grass and field fires today. The first fire occurred about 10 30 a m near A street southeast. The second fire, at 12 20 p m, was in the Island City vicinity southeast of Linton.
The Indiana primary slate lists 10 districts with Republican incumbents in most districts and Democrats fielding multiple challengers. Notable entries include Rep. Ray Madden in the 1st and Rep. William G. Bray in the 7th, with several unopposed Republican choices and assorted Democrat contenders across districts. The list names candidates by district and city, including Hammond Gary South Bend Fort Wayne and Indianapolis.

Teverbaugh a 49 year old Monroe City man linked to Indiana Highway scandals was fined Saturday in Bloomfield justice of the peace Frank C Dean's court after state road 57 stop near Newberry. He said he knew he was driving too fast and had the trial on his mind. Other defendants in same court included Don A Olive fined 1 dollar and costs for unlawful passing and Clarence E Foster fined 1 dollar and costs for reckless driving on West Main. Miss Sue Hatcher of Linton was fined 1 dollar and costs for passing a school bus on state road 54 March 25.
Carroll County Sheriff Calvin Carey left La Fayette Hospital and returned home to recuperate from bullet wounds suffered when two Chicago prisoners shot him during a transport to jail for questioning in two school burglaries.
