Plans for an open house at Glenburn Rest Haven from 2 to 5 p.m. Friday honor Bert on his 81st birthday. A new wheelchair arrives for Bert and the fund totals 122.85 with unnamed donors.
In Singapore, leftist Indonesian students protested the U S embassy demanding arms to rebels be halted. U S Ambassador Howard P Jones pledged to do all he can to prevent rebel access to American weapons while noting arms can be bought on the international market. The demonstration drew boos as Jones spoke.
INDIANAPOLIS Virgil Red Smith former Indiana highway chairman will testify in the second highway trial of attorney Robert Peak Hopkins said they will not hide anything After this trial there will be no mystery as to what occurred Hopkins who took over the case last week replacing Peak's attorney in the first trial which saw Peak and Smith convicted on charges of conspiring to embezzle state funds Peak did not testify in the first trial but Hopkins said he would this time Prospective jurors were questioned Monday opening the trial on charges of notarizing the false and fraudulent signature of Dean Burton or legal notes continued on page two

A Braniff International DC7 crashed in the Florida Everglades vicinity shortly after midnight, killing nine passengers or crew aboard and injuring others. The four engined airliner bound for Rio de Janeiro with stops in Panama and Peru went down after taking off from Miami, with survivors and bodies recovered from the muck as rescue workers pressed the search and firefighting effort.

Mrs Clelia Belle Young 64 of Linton died at Freeman Greene County Hospital after a three week illness. She lived in Linton 43 years at 539 North Main Street born in St Charles Kentucky on November 10 1893 daughter of Rufus and Catharine Suthard. Survived by husband William Robert Young a son Paul D Young brother Claybourne Suthard sister Mrs Jara Long and half sister Mrs Hazel Houchin. Edward E Flanagan 79 of Linton dies at Freeman Greene County Hospital after four years of illness He worked 48 years for Illinois Central Railroad and retired nine years ago He is survived by wife Emma C Flanagan a nephew Charles Olgus and a niece Mary Hirmer of Lockport Ill Burial in Fairview Cemetery service Thursday afternoon.
In Chicago Sugar Ray Robinson weighed 159 3 4 pounds and Carmen Basilio 153 pounds for their return middleweight title bout. Basilio and former champ Robinson were lighter than last September when Basilio won the crown at Yankee Stadium. Robinson reportedly faced weight-making difficulty, and both fighters were below the 160-pound limit.

The King Construction Company posted the low bid of 166 158 for a bridge over Middlefork Creek on U S 41, 1.5 miles north of Carlisle. Indiana State Highway Commission reported bids on state bridge and road projects totaling over 10 million dollars.
Detroit General Motors and the United Auto Workers begin talks on profit sharing and a basic economic package. Louis G. Seaton and Earl Bramblett lead GM negotiators while Walter Reuther and Leonard Woodcock head the UAW. Talks start 66 days before the current contract expires.
