A new trial will be held for thirteen Washington city firemen after Special Judge Charles Hunt sustained their motion in Greene circuit court Bloomfield. June 20 is tentatively set for the new hearing as the verdict was not supported by sufficient evidence. The firemen claimed appointment by the Washington city council and fixed terms under state law, while the city argued for definite appointments.
James C. Huber of Bowling Green operating a livestock route between Clay County and Indianapolis was held up near Plainfield by two bandits who boarded his truck and ordered a southward turn. They beat him and stole his pocketbook with more than seven dollars before driving off with the vehicle.
Carrol Gravemier 38 lifelong Linton resident died at Robert Long hospital Indianapolis after a week of illness. He worked as a trucking contractor for the Works Progress Administration and was a member of Linton First Baptist Church. Survived by widow Edith and five children, his mother Ida Birdfield, a sister, and other relatives. Funeral set for Thursday at 3 in Linton Baptist Church, Rev. Harry J. Bailey officiating, burial in Fairview Cemetery.
Officers were re elected for the Linton Retail Merchants association at a public library meeting. Charles W Johnson was named president Wayne Hamilton vice president Harry E Zonder secretary Wilson Hixson treasurer. Executive committee members are John R Ecker Roy Borders and Floyd Cornett. The group discussed aims and planned a concerted program of activity after a year with limited action.
Mrs. Clarence Hensley and baby were taken to their home Tuesday. Paul Messick was discharged this afternoon from the hospital.

Roach 80 a Mineral City farmer and pension attorney will be held at 2 pm Thursday in Walnut Grove church southeast of Bloomfield burial in the nearby cemetery He died Tuesday of heart disease after a two day illness Survived by seven sons two daughters two brothers and 23 grandchildren.

Clifford Townsend and the Democratic party for the legislature’s failure to repeal the track weight tax law and to revise the gross income tax law. The 81st Indiana General Assembly adjourned with a record low of 160 bills enacted, short of the 1905 mark of 172.
Fire at 4 45 Tuesday afternoon damaged the home of James Holder in South Linton when the roof caught fire. Linton City Fire Department responded promptly and controlled the blaze. Loss amount not available.
Mr and Mrs Eugene Ladson of this city learned Tuesday that Harry Mollett of Georgetown Indiana former resident of Linton has been seriously hurt in a mine accident near Georgetown He suffered two broken vertebra and four broken ribs The latest report said he was getting along as well as could be expected

A Nationalist radio outlet from Burgos under Gen Francisco Franco claimed a major offensive against Madrid was imminent. The report cited near-Hendaye on the Franco-Spanish frontier as the location of the announcement.
General Jose Miaja sent veteran shock troops against revolting communists in Madrid and gave them until noon to surrender or face annihilation. Reports say many communist units surrendered, raising hope the revolt would collapse quickly after a night of intermittent firing in the north. The troops include veteran anarchists who had fought on the Guadalajara front and aided in the defeat of Italian forces.
Rollie Spice a 31 year old former Lyons resident and Bloomington bank robber was captured in Trinidad Colorado after two years on the run. He previously escaped from the Indiana Reformatory in 1937 and later surrendered under persuasion from Indiana University psychologist Ebar A. Teter. He was sentenced to ten years at the Indiana State Reformatory.
Bobby Hess a Linton golf professional was named chair of the Southern district of the Wabash Valley Greenskeepers Association. The group aims to improve local courses with programs and is affiliated with the Indiana Greenskeepers. Meetings will be at various courses including Charleston and Indianapolis Country Club with a field day planned in Indianapolis. The southern district covers Linton Washington Vincennes Princeton Lawrenceville Oblong Bicknell and Jasper.
A golden eagle, possibly driven from the Sierras by snow, flew into Porterville California and settled on a large tree before alighting on the Pioneer hotel rooftop. It remained there for much of the afternoon before leaving the area.

Paul Messick local attorney left Freeman Greene county hospital under his own power after a friendly collision at a bowling alley. He fell during horseplay with a team member, incurred a facial cut and a possible concussion. He walked from the hospital today and appeared to be recovering.
John Madaris of Linton was convicted of trespassing in William L. Jackson's justice court. He was fined 25 dollars and costs totaling 44.20 dollars and held in the Bloomfield jail for two weeks unable to post 200 dollars bond.
Victor Nogus Sr., a longtime Bicknell merchant and former Linton coal miner, died Monday at Good Samaritan hospital in Vincennes from complications of pneumonia. A native of France, he lived 36 years in the United States and 23 years in Bicknell. He is survived by his widow, three sons Victor Jr Alfred Henry all of Bicknell, a daughter Louisa L of home, three grandchildren and three sisters. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Bicknell Methodist church with burial in the I. O. F. cemetery.
E. N. Kestner 49 deputy state treasurer of Brownstown died in a Seymour hospital after a major operation. He had arrived for treatment days earlier and received two blood transfusions from his son that failed to save him. A Democratic civic leader, he took office Feb 15 when Joe Robertson became state treasurer. Previously he was a Citizens Bank cashier in Brownstown for 14 years.
