Indiana lawmakers near toll road compromise amid possible special session

Indiana legislators edged toward a noon adjournment today as a House Senate conference committee weighed Rep. Walter Maehling’s proposal to settle the toll road dispute. Senators pressed restrictions in the budget to curb tolls, with talk of a potential special session if a compromise fails and the 61 day session ends without a budget.

Identity of Woman Is Being Sought

Tell City Indiana authorities sought the identity of a woman whose badly decomposed body was found in the Ohio River. State Police said she appeared to have been dead about three weeks and was about 40 years old, wearing a blue dress a diamond wedding ring and false teeth. The body was found Sunday morning and taken to a local funeral home.

City-buster blast detonated at Nevada proving ground

The Atomic Energy Commission fired the fourth and largest 1955 nuclear test atop Yucca Flat at 7:20 am. The blast created a 40,000 ton TNT equivalent fireball seen 80 miles away and 6 states distant. About 600 soldiers and 103 aircraft observed the test with no casualties reported. The test site was declared safe an hour later.

Farm Cash Receipts Will Be Lower

Indiana farmers will see about five percent lower cash receipts this year due to falling hog prices. Although hog numbers rise, price declines more than offset volume gains, with peak hog prices expected between May and August, especially June and July. Cash farm expenses remain about the same, widening the drop in net cash receipts.

Nationalists reinforce Matsu Island amid invasion fears

The 13,000 man garrison on Matsu Island is being reinforced two to three times as Nationalist naval sources say troops are ferried in by Nationalist ships under air cover. U S officials claim American forces could defend Matsu if ordered, while denial of evacuation and new U S aid including 22 landing craft are announced.

Red Cross Names Leaders for Greene County Drive

Victor Briggs will act as Linton chairman of the annual Red Cross fund drive for Greene County. George W. Auer is county chairman. Blood donors sought for Mrs DeVoto at Coleman Hospital

Eight Hoosiers Die In Weekend Road Toll

A crash north of Charlestown claimed five lives including U S Deputy Marshal Andrew Taff and relatives while a snowbound collision on Ind 100 near Indianapolis killed two more. Another fatality occurred when 16 year old Adolphus Medley was struck by a train at a Summitville crossing. Police cited high speed and a snow storm as factors.

Paul McNutt Ill and Rushed to United States

Paul V. McNutt former Indiana governor and longtime American Legion leader was flown to the United States after becoming seriously ill in Manila. He arrived abroad for a Philippine American Life Insurance Co meeting and is to be treated in New York after earlier throat treatment in New York last fall. He travels with his wife and a Manila physician.

John Wesley Bartlett 84 a retired coal miner and Jasonville resident died at 4 30 PM Saturday at his daughter Mrs Don Stockrahm home on North Fry Street Road Jasonville. Hotel Washington Fire Evacuates 200 Guests in Indianapolis

About 200 guests at the 17 story Hotel Washington in downtown Indianapolis were evacuated Sunday morning after a fire started on the 16th floor. Flames from a bakery spread to a linen room on the top floor but did not reach guest rooms. Firemen contained the blaze in about an hour with no injuries reported. The fire was noticed by manager Clark Dohn and a night clerk.

Comstock Rites Held at Dugger

Mrs. Martha J. Comstock age 89 died Saturday at Mary Sherman hospital Sullivan after a monthlong illness. Born January 17 1856 in Perry county Indiana she was a Christian church member. She is survived by four sons three daughters two step sons and two step daughters totaling 39 grandchildren and 52 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held today at the Dugger Church of Christ Maurice Clymore officiated and burial will be in Dugger. Newkirk Funeral home handled arrangements.

Crippled Children's Society Plans Easter Seal Drive

The Greene County Society for Crippled Children meets at 7:30 p.m. at the REMC building near Bloomfield to discuss the annual Easter Seal campaign directed by Guy Glover of Bloomfield. Ohio Flood Forces Hoosier Families to Flee

The Ohio River overflow forced evacuations in six Indiana counties as flood crests were forecast between 43 and 45 feet. Cold snap and wind driven snow worsened conditions while nearby rivers like the Wabash and White River showed varying stages and forecasts amid rising and falling levels. Fourteen Airmen Believed Killed in Formosa Crash
