Indianapolis March 7 Senate approves House bill 274 83 to 10 creating state county and city truancy officers with per diem pay 3 to 5 dollars. Requires children 7 to 16 to attend school where English is taught unless excused. 14 to 16 may quit with employment cert. 14 to 16 not yet completed sixth grade may be required part time schooling. Governor must sign for law.

Grass Fire Threatens Homes Near City Switch
A large grass and weed fire burned Saturday night between the old Bon Ton site and the I. and W. No. 5 switch southwest of the city. It raged over two hours with excitement high, but no houses were damaged, likely saved by railroad tracks.

Indiana’s 1911–Today Common School Growth Across State
Indiana lists about 12 000 common schools now, up 2 000 in ten years. In 1911 the state had 10 161 common schools with 5 796 brick and 4 355 frame buildings. There were 355 high schools then. now 732 recognized. Teachers’ salaries rose from 2 62 to about 5 a day for high school staff with ~200 days a year. Some districts run nine months, others six. Two cross‑border schools exist at Union City and College Corners on the Indiana‑Ohio line requiring dual licenses, a setup seen as odd for hockey‑minded pupils.
