Washington dispatch details a state department release outlining Soviet style torture used by Bulgarian security militia to obtain confessions. Michael Shipkov describes 32 hours of questioning, standing berated, and forced to confess under duress with death penalties looming in the state.
Midshipman William Lindsey 21 of Mobile Alabama died when a Douglas Skyraider wing folded during a routine cross country flight crashing near Belleville Illinois. The Navy said folding wings lock extended for carrier storage and six crew from Virginia Beach landed at the base Saturday night.
Dr and Mrs Bert Farthing of Linton spent Sunday in Shelbyville visiting Charles Farthing brother of Dr Farthing who is seriously ill.
Mrs Lillian Mae Hartman aged 73 died Saturday afternoon at Evansville after a year long illness. She longtime resident of the Linton community, born October 27 1876 in La Grange to Edward and Barbara Leeland. Survived by husband Harry Hartman and one granddaughter Mrs A Wiltz. son Clarence died in 1918. Funeral at Welch and Cornett Funeral Home tonight officiated by Rev Chester W Scott. Body to be moved to Flanner and Buchanan Mortuary Indianapolis Tuesday for cremation.
Indianapolis March 6 two young lovers Marion Jessup 21 a Lawrence HS graduate and Karol Hardy 16 were found dead in a car believed killed by accidental carbon monoxide suffocation after a date. The stepfather Russell Peters found them in his driveway as dawn broke the car ignition was on and the tank empty. Deputy coroner Joseph Jewett attributed death to accidental suffocation from carbon monoxide.
A R Powell 74 died at his Bicknell home this morning from a heart attack. He formerly lived in Linton. Survived by widow Della Powell of Bicknell two sons Gerald Powell Lawrenceville Ill and Rex Powell Lafayette a daughter Opal Horn Vincennes mother Emma Powell Linton and brother Lloyd Powell Linton. Funeral arrangements to be announced tomorrow.
The Linton Fire Department responded Saturday night to Twelfth Street Southeast where a pickup owned by Bob Lewis of South Linton caught fire. Minor damage was caused to the truck wiring.
Three felony indictments against Circuit Judge Norval K. Harris dismissed for jury substitution will be refiled this week. The charges cover forgery embezzlement and issuing a fraudulent check tied to a birth certificate signature and a $150 payment to a former client. The case arose after Judge Ralph A. Seal ruled the grand jury action illegal due to substituted jurors.
Prime Minister Clement Attlee announced the Labour government intends to enact the iron and steel nationalization law. He said no immediate action would be taken in the new session and stressed the statute exists to give effect to Parliament's acts. Attlee and Anthony Eden agreed Parliament's division should not weaken Britain's foreign policy voice.
In Bloomfield today the Greene circuit court granted a divorce to Joseph L. Surmont from Dorothy Lucille Surmont on his cross complaint. Harold Bailey ve’s custody of a minor was awarded to Dorothy Lucille Surmont. Kenneth Bays’ complaint for damages filed Jan 7 1947 was continued and reset for May 9.
Funeral services for Bert Bickel aged 55 of Anderson, formerly of Jasonville, were held at McClanahan Funeral Home with Rev. Bert Sanders presiding. Burial followed in Burris Cemetery. Born June 15, 1894 west of Jasonville to Adam and Martha Bickel, he left the area twenty years ago and died Friday in Indianapolis while working at a hospital where he and his wife were employed. He leaves his wife and siblings including Thomas Bickel of Los Angeles and Myrtle Fallowell of Evansville.
Quapaw Council No. also announces degree work at its regular meeting in the Red Men's Hall here Tuesday at 7 o'clock. All members urged to attend.
Four men are killed and three wounded in a Brooklyn stabbing spree by 19 year old William Jones. Doctors study his background after his release from Mattewan State hospital for the criminal insane where he had been an inmate for 14 months. He went on the attack shortly before 4 p.m. on a sunny Sunday.
Initiation services will be held with the regular Chickateth Council No 253 meeting in Red Men's Hall at seven this evening. All lodge members and the degree team are urged to attend and bring gifts for the grab bag.
The clerk of the Greene circuit court in Bloomfield issues a marriage license to James Robert Deckard of Lyons and Mary Evelyn Sanders of Sandborn Route Two.
A meeting of the Linton Community Conservation club will be held at the clubhouse in Lee-Sherard park at 7:20 tonight. Officers urge all members to attend as plans are made for a special meeting on Wednesday with representatives from The Indiana State Conservation department.
Dr. Hermann N. Sander, on trial for mercy killing in Manchester New Hampshire, says something snapped when he injected air into cancer patient Mrs Abbie C Borretto. He claims he believed she was dead before the injection and cannot explain his actions.
Franklin Indiana March 6. The city school board met to discuss charges from a parents meeting claiming improper education. About 50 parents formed a committee to press complaints including overemphasis of Progressive teaching methods and reduced focus on the three R's. Superintendent Sheek declined comment. Board president Yount said no formal complaints had been received.
Herbert Poole of Linton was injured in a Sunday morning collision in Terre Haute when his car was struck as he turned left onto Twenty fifth street from Wabash avenue. Walter George and passenger William Lee Frederick, both from Terre Haute, were hospitalized but reported in good condition. Poole was treated and released. George’s car sustained about 400 dollars damage.
Sunday visitors at Mrs. Will Cunningham included Mr. and Mrs. Phil Templeton and Mrs. John A. Templeton of Terre Haute along with Mrs. Lou B. Fleetwood Mrs. Laura Nail and Mrs. George Hedrick of Linton.
A new wage boosting contract ends a long coal strike. About 158000 United Mine Workers return to work as 28 month agreement raises wages 70 cents a day and 10 cents a ton for welfare fund payments. The accord eliminates the willing and able clause and reshapes welfare and trusteeship. Public and industry observers expect a rapid return to normal production.
Arthur Woolard aged 36 died Saturday morning at his home after a long illness. He lived near Linton for about three years and was born in Illinois. Survived by widow Helen Buchanan Woolard and five children, plus four brothers and one sister. Funeral service held at Pleasantville Methodist church with burial in Indian Prairie cemetery. Newkirk Funeral Home arranged the rites.
Plymouth Indiana March 6 UP one man killed and another injured when a 160 car freight train crashed into a stopped St P rail line one mile from here. The dead man was John Hartman fireman Fort Wayne. Engineman H D Ellenwood Fort Wayne injured taken to Parkview hospital. Thirty five cars derailed and tracks blocked. witnesses said 15 cars were shoved off the westbound track at right angles to the rail.
A coroner ruled the deaths of Ferdinand Kusmick and his wife Elizabeth in South Bend accidental, caused by a leaking gas main. The bodies were found after a neighbor alerted police, saying he had not seen them since early Saturday.
