Youthful Tragedies Highlight Fourth of July Dangers

A 1950s warning notes 20000 children in the United States may lose a life or endure injuries during Fourth of July celebrations. The American Museum of Safety cites annual surveys showing rising deaths and injuries, with 8000 additional victims this year. Bedford Ind June 29 Lawrence Turpin 19 son of Alin Turpin Bedford confessed to Sheriff John Tyree Chief of Police A Jbee and James Able Deputy prosecutor that he and James Jenkins 41 son of George Jenkins killed Zack Burton Mitchell groceryman and filling station owner the night of time 10 He said Jenkins fired the fatal shot when they attempted to hold him up The two will be held for September term of Lawrence circuit court.

Electrical storm damages municipal transformers

During a night electrical storm two Muy municipal Light Co transformers suffered considerable damage but were not ruined. One sits at Second and A streets northwest, the other at Fifth and I streets northwest. Light service in parts of the northwest district was disrupted only briefly.

High School to Feature Acts in July Celebration

Linton school pupils will perform Indian and Spanish girls French Vineyard and other acts at the Fourth of July celebration in Houseman Grove next Wednesday. Rehearsals are set for Monday at 10 o clock at the Maine school building to prepare the program.

Strip mining activity expanding in Pike County lands

From Indianapolis June 29. A survey of the state shows strip mining gaining momentum as New York Electric Shovel Co. buys Ingle Coal holdings in Pike County with access to over 4,000 acres in Monroe and Patoka townships. A railroad switch is under construction to move coal. Arthur No. 8 mine tipple is being remodeled for stripping, with potential output 6,000 to 7,000 tons daily. Leases also proceed near Cato with 6,000 acres, and in Logan Township south of Petersburg.

French Gains Halt German Attacks Near Soissons

On June 29, 1918, French forces held gains and repelled counterattacks southwest of Soissons while British units captured prisoners. The day marked continued Allied pressure as WWI operations intensified.
