Armed Forces May Protest Cut in Defense Spending
The Kennedy administration plans to slow the rise in defense outlays for fiscal 1965 starting July 1 1964. Protests from the armed forces are expected as manpower could be trimmed by about 60 000 and overseas deployments scaled back while Navy fleets and older aircraft are reduced and nuclear material production is cut. Pentagon denials followed but Rep Mahon notes future defense reductions can not be ruled out as overseas support is targeted to drop from 2 billion to 1 billion annually by 1966.

Ag Department Extends Emergency Aid to 12 Drought States
The Agriculture Department will provide emergency assistance to farmers in twelve drought affected states including Arkansas Arizona Colorado Louisiana Mississippi Missouri New Jersey New York Ohio Pennsylvania Texas and Utah. Drought and a late May freeze reduced the June 1 winter wheat forecast by 72 million bushels and hay prospects are below average due to limited soil moisture. Wheat plantings for 1964 are projected at about 60 million acres, up from under 50 million in 1963, as farmers rejected the 1964 wheat program for strict controls in favor of a 50 percent parity price support plan unlikely to be widely followed.
